Local teams advance in girls soccer state tournament

The girls soccer regular season is over, so now the all-important, ever-exciting state tournament begins.

The Davis Darts grabbed the No. 1 seed in Class 6A after finishing with a 10-0 record in Region 1 and going an impressive 15-0 in the regular season overall. The Darts got a first-round playoff bye and then hosted Herriman in round two, winning 3-1.

The victory wasn’t easy, as Davis was up just 2-1 at the break. But Davis scored in the second half and kept the Mustangs off the board after halftime. Avery Thai scored twice for Davis, and Lucy Potter added the third goals. Next up for Davis is a quarterfinals matchup at home against Skyridge on Thursday.

Farmington

After losing twice during the regular season to Weber in heartbreakers, Farmington got its revenge in the second round of the state tournament on Oct. 10. This time around, it was all Farmington, as the Phoenix won 3-0. Bella Sacket, Claire Rencher and Madison Davis scored for Farmington. Emmy Mckeon got the shutout, while Cara Christopherson and Brynlee Austin got assists.

With the win, Farmington improved to 9-8 on the season. The defending Class 6A runners-up face second-seeded Lone Peak on the road in a quarterfinals game on Thursday.

Bountiful

The Redhawks moved to 13-4 overall with a second-round win in the 5A state tournament over Roy. Bountiful won 4-2, defeating the Royals for the second time in the three tries this season. In the previous meeting on Sept. 12, Bountiful won the region game 9-2 – this after falling to Roy 2-1 on Aug. 15.

In the playoff victory, all four Bountiful goals came in the second half. Avah Spinning, Emmy Sorenson, Belle Sorensen and Ellyse Kessler scored for the Redhawks. Sophie Winzeler and Myka Page assisted. It was Spinning’s first goal of the year and Sorensen’s 16th (31st of her career).

Bountiful plays at Springville in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Woods Cross

The Wildcats also picked up a playoff win, defeating Hunter 4-0 in the first round on Oct. 5. The win improved Woods Cross to 9-7.

Oaklee Anderson scored twice, and Clara Howes and Deja Evans also had goals – all in the first half. Sam Vincent played goalie and got her first shutout of the season.

With the win, Woods Cross advanced to the second round, meeting Wasatch on the road. But the Wasps proved to be a little too much, ending the Wildcats’ season with a 3-1 victory.

Anderson scored a second-half goal for Woods Cross, but Wasatch’s two first-half goals put the Wildcats in a hole. Anderson’s goal capped a stellar season in which she notched 22 goals. For her career, the senior tallied 38 goals. Her goal total this season topped all players in 5A.

Viewmont

It was a rough season for Viewmont, but that didn’t stop the Vikings for pulling off an upset in the 5A state tournament.

Viewmont was 4-12 in the regular season and got the 20th seed in the playoffs. The Vikings had to play its Region 5 foe Box Elder, a team that Viewmont did beat 1-0 on Sept. 21. So when the two teams met again on Oct. 5, it shouldn’t have been a shock that Viewmont won the game, 3-1.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Viewmont had three goals in the second half. Three different players got on the board, with Mazie Tullis, Alauna Titensor and Saylor Miller scoring. Annie Layton and Taylor Feinauer had assists.

The magic ended, however, on Oct. 10, when Viewmont fell on the road to a talented Springville team, 4-2. Viewmont got two goals from Layton, as Katie Wersland and Tally Smith got assists. But Springville had two goals in both halves to win the game.

Viewmont’s season came to a close with a 5-13 record.
