FHS volleyball wins silver bracket at tournament

Farmington

The Farmington High varsity volleyball team beat Spanish Fork, Shelley (Idaho), Skyline, Delta and Morgan at the Green Canyon tournament Oct. 6-7, winning the silver bracket. The Phoenix squad’s only loss was against Woods Cross 25-19, 25-16 in its third match of the tournament.

In the title match at the tournament against Morgan, senior Laina Whitney had 23 kills and 10 digs along with junior Ellyse Taylor’s 14 kills and 12 digs. Senior setter Brady Day also recorded a double-double of 49 assists and 13 digs.

In a Region 1 match Oct. 3, Farmington defeated Fremont 25-17, 25-17, 27-25 behind nine kills each from Whitney and Taylor and five aces from senior Rachel Shingleton. Day ran the offense with 20 assists while also recording 10 digs. Also shining on defense were seniors Quincy Wilson and Brinlee Galbraith with 11 digs each and senior Jenna Goates with six blocks at the net. 

The Phoenix are now 4-2 in region play and 16-8 overall this season.

Davis

Davis lost to Weber 22-25, 19-25, 25-8, 25-18, 15-8. Oct. 5. 

Senior Loryn Helgesen put away 12 kills to lead the Darts while senior Emily Walker ran the offense with 17 assists while also serving up three aces.

Defensively, junior Anabell Briggs had nine digs with Walker adding eight and senior Jenna Sullivan recording three blocks at the net.

Davis is now 2-4 in Region 1 and 6-10 on the year.

Bountiful

Bountiful defeated Bonneville 25-13, 25-11, 25-14 Oct. 3, bringing its Region 5 record to 10-0 this season.

In a Mountain View tournament Oct. 5-7, the Redhawks pulled out two five-setters over Sky View 17-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16 and Madison (Idaho) 25-23, 25-21, 25-27, 19-25, 18-16 along with a win over Ridgeline 25-17, 19-25, 25-18, 25-14. Its two losses on the weekend were to 6A’s third-ranked Lone Peak 25-22, 25-16, 25-18 and No. 4 Bingham 25-16, 25-14, 25-18.

“Overall, I’m super proud of the girls and the way they fought every match,” said head coach Kelsie White. “Against Sky View the girls played clean, fun volleyball and Taylor Harvey beat her own kill record, totaling 42 kills in a five-set match, leading us to the win. The highlight of the tournament for us was playing Madison in another five-set match. At one point we were down 10-5 in the fifth, but the girls battled back and won 18-16. It was a whole team effort and a season highlight.” 

Bountiful is now 16-7 overall this season.

Viewmont

Viewmont lost to Northridge in a tough five-set battle 14-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-13 Oct. 3.

“Those in attendance were treated to a great match,” said head coach Karl Lippa. “We started off strong winning the first two sets and had a great flow in the match with tremendous offensive play. After the intermission, Northridge made some adjustments in their rotations and increased their defense incredibly well, winning the final sets to take the match.”

The Vikings fell to 6-4 in the Region 5 standings and 11-9 this year.

Woods Cross

Woods Cross beat Clearfield 25-17, 25-13, 25-13 Oct. 3.

Avery Poulton led the team with 13 kills while Brylee Howard added eight, Millie Oscarson seven and Annie Lewis five. Zamari Christensen and Anau Tuaone ran the offense with 19 and 11 assists, respectively. On the defensive end, Dani Brey had 12 digs with Poulton recording 10 and Howard and Christensen each having seven.

Against Bonneville Oct. 5, the Wildcats won 25-12, 25-14, 25-16 with Alisi Tapa’atoutai and Howard putting away eight kills each – hitting at .667 and .566 clips, respectively. Nesi Pututau also had seven kills with Howard serving four aces to also help offensively. Christensen and Akilisi Pahulu teamed up for 25 assists in running the offense while Poulton recorded 14 digs on the back line.

At the Green Canyon tournament Oct. 6-7, Woods Cross beat Spanish Fork, Shelley (Idaho), Farmington and Pocatello (Idaho) in straight sets. Its two losses on the weekend were against Weber 12-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-16 and Green Canyon 25-23, 25-22, 25-23.

The Wildcats are now 19-6 on the season and have a 10-1 Region 5 mark.
