Bryan Gray’s take on ‘Meet the Candidate’ events missed the mark

Oct 13, 2023 02:30PM ● By Nelda Bishop

Two weeks ago, columnist Bryan Gray expressed his opinion that very little is learned at “Meet the Candidate” events. I beg to differ! Having spent decades organizing dozens of Meet the Candidate events in Davis County as a member of the League of Women Voters of Davis County I believe Bryan Gray has never attended an event we have organized or he would know it’s an important and easy way to become an informed voter.

We invite every candidate on the ballot. We don’t favor or oppose candidates or political parties. We are careful to give every candidate equal time. We rotate answers so every candidate has the opportunity to give a first answer. We only ask questions about topics the winning candidates may actually vote on if elected to serve in that specific office. We post the meetings online after the event. Hundreds of Davis County residents meet their candidates at our events or online after the events. It is easy to meet your candidates and make an informed vote!

This season, we will be co-hosting city council meet the candidate events at the following city halls:

West Bountiful on Monday, Oct. 16;  Bountiful on Wednesday, Oct. 18;  Syracuse on Wednesday, Oct. 25;  North Salt Lake on Thursday, Oct. 26; and Fruit Heights on Thursday, Nov. 2. All events include a Meet and Greet at 6:30 p.m. so you can ask your own questions with a forum beginning at 7 p.m. All events will be recorded and available on city websites and at lwvutah.org/davis-county. Ballots will be mailed to registered voters beginning Nov. 1. In-person voting will be Nov. 21.  Register to vote at vote.utah.gov.
