Region 1 football: playoffs set for Davis, Farmington

Oct 19, 2023 12:43PM ● By Josh McFadden

Though the Davis and Farmington football teams have had different seasons, both have the chance of competing for a state title.

This Friday, the Class 6A state tournament begins, as both teams focus on big upcoming games. Davis secured the sixth seed and a first-round bye. In the second round, the Darts will host a familiar foe in 11th-seeded Weber on Oct. 27. Davis beat Weber 45-26 on Sept. 15. It was one of nine wins in the regular season for the Darts against one loss. Davis captured the Region 1 title with a perfect 5-0 record.

The Darts clinched the league championship with a 22-10 win over Syracuse on Oct. 12. Playing at home, Davis got off to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter following a 28-yard field goal from Finn Garff and a 1-yard touchdown run from Owen Talbot. Syracuse scored a touchdown in the second quarter to cut it to 10-7. But Davis extended its lead to 16-7 after a 5-yard pass from Tradon Bessinger to Kash Gates just before halftime.

Neither team scored in the third quarter. However, Syracuse made things interesting when it made a field goal early in the fourth to cut the margin to 16-10. Midway through the fourth quarter, Talbot scored his second touchdown of the day, this time from 2 yards out. This clinched the win and the Region 1 title for the Darts. It was Davis’ first region title since it won the Region 2 crown in 2015.

In the regular season finale against Syracuse, Bessinger had 287 yards passing on 29 of 35 completions. Two players for Davis broke the 100-yard mark in receiving. Bode Sparrow had seven catches for 125 yards, while Gates had 12 grabs for 101 yards. On defense, McCoy Frasure and Crew Cunningham had nine tackles apiece.

Farmington

The Phoenix went 2-7 during the regular season but still got the No. 13 seed and a first-round bye in the state tournament. The Phoenix have a tough game on Oct. 17 when they travel to Skyridge for a second-round matchup.

A favorable seed might not have come had Farmington not prevailed in its final regular season game, a 38-17 rout of Fremont. The game was actually not as close as the score might indicate. Farmington was up 24-0 at halftime and 31-0 with 9:07 left in the game.

Easton Wight threw three touchdown passes in the first 15 ½ minutes of the game to help lead the Phoenix to victory. He hit Travis Hoopes from 13 yards out halfway through the first quarter, followed by a 12-yarder to Jake Metcalfe with 1:01 remaining in the first. The two then connected with 8:35 left in the second quarter. This preceded a 39-yard field goal from Jake Romney. Lucas Peterson then scored on a 1-yard run.

Up 31-0 Farmington saw Fremont score two consecutive touchdowns to cut the lead to 31-14. But the Phoenix responded with a 2-yard TD run from Wight with 57 seconds to play in the contest. Fremont oddly elected to kick an inconsequential field goal on the final play of the game to account for the final score.

Besides passing for three touchdowns and rushing for another, Wight had 138 yards through the air on 13 of 18 passing. Metcalfe had four catches for 51 yards to go with his two touchdowns. Hoopes had 103 yards rushing on 11 carries, while Peterson had eight carries for 57 yards. Metcalfe also had an interception on defense, and Oakley Jensen had a sack.
