Viewmont’s Gabe Hooper leads Vikings to state silver cross country trophy

It was a silver day for Viewmont High boys’ runners at the 5A state cross country championships on Tuesday at the Regional Athletic Complex in Salt Lake City. Viking senior Gabe Hooper finished his prep career with the silver medal after a strong second-place finish in a time of 15:15.2. Olympus senior JoJo Jourdan won the race at 14:58.3.

Hooper’s efforts led the Vikings to a second-place team finish and the silver trophy. He was joined in the scoring by teammates junior Ben Hyde in 15th at 16:02.5, senior Weston Egnew (20th, 16:09.9), junior Hayden Arbuckle (26th, 16:15.9); and junior Talmage Bruschke (29th, 16:18). Viewmont’s boys finished with 92 points, with Maple Mountain winning the title at 82.

Woods Cross senior Brady Christensen also medaled, coming in seventh overall in a time of 15:47.6. Also earning Top 20 spots were Bountiful juniors Hayden Hooper (12th, 15:57.4) and Simon Barlow (13th, 16:00.4).

The Wildcats finished eighth in team scoring. Woods Cross scoring runners were senior Brennon Koldewyn (42nd, 16:30.9), senior Micah Gillespie (45th, 16:33.1), senior Jameson Blanchard (47th, 16:35.8) and sophomore Sam Phippen (73rd, 17:18.0). 

Bountiful finished 11th as a team. Besides Hooper and Barlow, other scorers for the Redhawks were senior Phillip Olsen (72nd, 17:17.8), senior Romney Stewart (88th, 17:31.7) and senior Trevor Cummings (112th, 17:58.7).

Woods Cross junior Katie Hansen was the top local finisher in 5A girls, coming home in 19th place in a time of 19:16.9. Her sophomore teammate Brie Nydegger was 23rd at 19:31.1. Other Wildcat scorers were junior Kiara DeVries (68th, 21:05.9), junior Kendell Rhees (102nd, 21:41.1) and sophomore Abby Marx (104th, 21:51.7). The Wildcats finished 13th as a team.

The Lady Vikings were leaders among the local teams in 5A, taking fifth. Viewmont was led by senior Naomi Egnew (25th, 19:34.8), senior Kiera Stacey (27th, 19:35.5), junior Andrey Lemon (33rd, 19:47.5), sophomore Brooklyn Brady (49th, 20:32.8) and junior Sarah Scott (51st, 20:34.6).

Bountiful’s girls finished 18th as a team. Scoring runners for Bountiful were senior Marjie Richards (45th, 20:33.4), junior Ella Becker (99th, 21:45.7), senior Eden Roberts (106th, 21:56.5), freshman Ellie Showalter (134th, 22:46.6) and senior Jennie Anderson (139th, 22:54.4).

Results weren’t quite as sweet for two Davis schools in the 6A division. 

In boys, Davis High finished eighth and Farmington High ninth. American Fork edged Herriman for the team title, as the Cavemen were led by superstar senior Daniel Simmons, who posted a time of 14:44.0. In fact, the Cavemen had the top three finishers.

For Davis, scoring runners were senior Isaac Lundberg (11th, 15:27.9), junior Jonny Reed (30th, 15:54.9), junior Carter Rawlings (53rd, 16:25.0), sophomore Gabe Trujillo (54th, 16:28.4) and junior Cade Rawlings (73rd, 16:50.9). Farmington scorers were junior Landon Sturgeon (27th, 15:51.3), senior Izaac Crosland (37th, 16:12.1), junior Ethan Lund (50th, 16:20.7), senior Tyler Muirbrook (57th, 16:31.5) and junior Koda Hildreth (60th, 16:35.1).

In the girls team scoring, Farmington finished seventh and Davis 11th. Defending champ Lone Peak easily won again. Farmington was led by junior Skye Siddoway, the top local finisher in 18th place with a time of 19:02.3. Her teammates who scored were junior Alexis Bradshaw (24th, 19:19.2), senior Katie Reaveley (61st, 20:08.8), senior Tai Aston (70th, 20:28.3) and senior Aubrey Demordaunt (77th, 20:35.8).

Davis’ top finisher was freshman Isabella Cram (30th, 19:25.5) who edged out teammate senior Katie Larsen (31st, 19:25.8). The other scoring runners for the Darts were junior Grace Frodsham (72nd, 20:31.1), senior Angelina Lione (73rd, 20:31.3) and senior Allie Allen (84th, 20:49.0).
