This letter was sent to the Student Government class at Boulton Elementary. It’s shared publicly to follow up on the previous front page story in the Davis Journal featuring Bountiful Mayor Kendalyn Harris.

Dear Student Government class at Boulton Elementary School,

It was wonderful to meet with you at your school. I was impressed by your big ideas, hopeful outlook and kindness to me, your teacher Mrs. McNeal, and each other.

When I came to your classroom, I shared some tips to be a good leader.  “Show up,” “Speak up” and “Shut up.” I know “shut up” can sound harsh, but I talked about the idea that sometimes, it isn’t our turn to talk. If we are busy talking we forget to listen and aren’t open to learning from others. I got an email from a wise woman named Becky who felt there was a better way to say the same thing. She’s right. The words we use matter.

So I want to ask you a question. Will your class allow me a do-over?

My advice for you to be good leaders is to “Show up,” “Speak up” and “Listen up” (instead of “Shut up”).  I don’t want to use rude or disrespectful words. We need more kindness in our words, thoughts and actions. I want to choose words that build up instead of words that tear down. The way we speak to each other sends a message that each person is valued and deserving of respect. At times you will disagree with others, and that’s fine. You can share your honest concerns about issues without personal put downs or name calling. Reasonable people will at times come to different conclusions, but everyone deserves respect.

Join with me in being careful in the words you choose so yours will be a powerful, uplifting voice for good in the community and the world!
