A Bountiful house fire Thursday afternoon claimed the life of a man who was unable to get out in time. The home

About 1:15 p.m. crews were dispatched to 2336 S. 200 West on a report of a house with smoke coming from the roof, said South Davis Metro Fire Chief Dane Stone. “When crews arrived they could see there was smoke inside the house so they went in. They discover a deceased male on the first floor.”

There were no other occupants in the home, he said. “We don’t know the cause of death. We’re not sure where or how but he had already succumbed to something.”

The fire had been going for a while, said Stone. “The person who called dispatch said it was the roof but when crews arrived they could see it coming from the chimney. They contained the structure and ventilated it for heat reduction for firefighters.”

Stone said it was an older home. “Crews saw a hole in the floor of the hallway before anyone got hurt. They got good knock down and put the fire out.”

All four stations responded, he said. “We emptied the firehouse but we had backup from Salt Lake and Gold Cross to run medical calls.”

The scene was turned over to the Bountiful Police Department and the Medical Examiner’s Office. “I’d estimate about $200,000 in damage,” said Stone. “It’s a total loss.”
