Viewmont’s Gabby Henry wins multiple events at Thanksgiving Invite

Viewmont High senior Gabby Henry won the 200 Individual Medley and 100 butterfly events at the Thanksgiving Invitational at the South Davis Recreation Center Nov. 17-18. She also swam legs on the Vikings’ second-place 200 freestyle relay squad and the 10th-place 400 free relay team to lead the girls team to a seventh-place showing out of 19 teams.

Woods Cross’ Justin Chamberlain and Ava Glissmeyer also placed first individually at the Invite with a win in the boys 100 breaststroke and the girls 100 free events, respectively. Chamberlain also swam on the first-place 200 medley relay squad that also included Isaac Chomjak, Ammon Kamauu and Diego Gutierrez.

Other top-10 finishers for Viewmont were Eric Chamberlain (second, 200 medley relay; sixth, 50 free; seventh, 100 fly), Thomas Chamberlain (second, 400 free relay; 10th, 200 IM; 10th, 200 free relay), Hallie Gerrard (second, 200 free relay; third, 50 free; sixth, 100 backstroke; 10th, 400 free relay), Isaac Hale (second, 200 medley relay; second, 400 free relay; third, 100 free; third, 100 back), Henry Helgesen (second, 200 medley relay; second, 400 free relay; fourth, 100 breast; 10th, 200 free relay), Vivienne Loose (second, 200 free relay; 10th, 400 free relay), Veronika Paschen (second, 200 free relay; 10th, 400 free relay), Andrew Webster (second, 200 medley relay; second, 400 free relay; fifth, 200 free), Rex Johnson (10th, 200 free relay) and Gus Stockhoff (10th, 200 free relay).

Also placing in the top 10 for Woods Cross were Justin Chamberlain (second, 200 IM; fourth, 400 free relay), Isaac Chomjak (second, 100 free; fourth, 100 back; fourth, 400 free relay), Glissmeyer (second, 100 back; fourth, 400 free relay), Alanna Holzer (second, 50 free; second, 100 free; fourth, 400 free relay), Rebekah Cyril (fourth, 400 free relay; 10th, 100 breast), Will Hunter (fourth, 400 free relay), Grace Gilbert (fourth, 400 free relay; ninth, 100 back), Ammon Kamauu (fourth, 500 free; eighth, 100 fly; eighth, 200 free relay), Moose Norman (fourth, 400 free relay; eighth, 200 free relay), Jade Blevans (sixth, 100 fly), Diego Gutierrez (eighth, 200 free relay) and Maxwell Holdstock (eighth, 200 free relay).


Davis

Davis’ Garrett Barker finished second in the 500 free event at the Thanksgiving Invite, breaking a school record with a time of 4:56.94, more than a minute faster than Tom Mi’s 2019 mark.

“We had some really fast swims at this meet as it was our toughest competition yet! And when the competition is hard, we swim faster!” said head coach Kit Barker.

Other top-10 showings for the fourth-place girls were Adlen Groberg (third, 200 free relay; seventh, 400 free relay), Micah Hale (third, 200 free relay; seventh, 400 free relay; ninth, 100 free), Julian Shaw (third, 200 free relay; sixth, 200 medley relay), Nahlia Stewart (third, 200 free relay; fourth, 50 free; seventh, 400 free relay), Jane Bassett (sixth, 200 medley relay; seventh, 400 free relay), Maureen Karren (sixth, 200 medley relay) and Elsie Smith (sixth, 200 medley relay).

For the seventh-place boys, Garrett Barker (third, 200 free; third, 200 free relay; fifth, 400 free relay); Jonah Hender (third, 200 free relay), Sam Landheim (third, 50 free; third, 200 free relay; fifth, 400 free relay; ninth, 100 fly), Mason Simmons (third, 200 free relay), Garrick Bench (fifth, 400 free relay) and Bryson Bernhardt (fifth, 400 free relay; sixth, 100 free) were among the top 10 finishers in their respective events.

“Even though many were sick, almost every swimmer dropped time in at least one event! And some by a lot!” Coach Barker said. She particularly noted Lucas Satthertwaite dropping more than 12 seconds in the 100 breast, Lilly Wood taking 12.10 seconds off her previous-best 500 free time and Erin Boyce finishing the 100 back in 1:32.88, nearly 10 seconds faster than her original PR.



Farmington

Farmington placed 10th at the Thanksgiving Invite behind an impressive showing from freshman Elsie Crowell, who broke the school record in the 100 back with a time of 1:03.62 – which earned a fifth-place finish in the event. She also swam legs on the fourth-place 200 free relay squad and the fifth-place 200 medley relay lineup while coming in 10th in the 200 free.

“Our Phoenix swimmers showed up and performed really well!” said head coach Stacy Edholm. “We were only able to bring about half of the team to this invitational, but we sure brought a lot of talent and earned valuable points.”

Other top-10 placers for the Phoenix team were Brooke Belnap (fourth, 200 free relay; fifth, 200 medley relay; eighth, 50 free), Jacie Nielson (fifth, 200 medley relay), London Spears (fourth, 200 free relay), Nerys Turnbaugh (fourth, 200 free relay; fifth, 200 medley relay), Kael Michaelson (fifth, 200 free relay; 10th, 400 free relay), Ezra Moon (fifth, 200 free relay; eighth, 100 free; 10th, 200 medley relay), Henry Norseth (fifth, 200 free relay), Will Scott (eighth, 100 breast; 10th, 200 medley relay; 10th, 400 free relay), Clarke Tholl (fifth, 200 free relay; 10th, 200 medley relay), Davis Nielson (10th, 400 free relay) and Jake Rizley (10th, 200 medley relay; 10th, 400 free relay).

Edholm commended Max Murray for dropping 18 seconds from his 200 free time with Jack Keller taking off more than 16 seconds in his 200 IM time. “They have been working incredibly hard in practice and competitions, earning those great time drops,” she said, while also noting senior captain Michael Treu’s efforts in his sprint events.



Bountiful

At the Thanksgiving Invite, Andy Duke was second in the 100 breaststroke to lead the Bountiful boys while Ellie Watkins was the highest finisher for the girls with a seventh-place showing in the 100 fly event.


Other top-10 finishes for the Redhawks were Liam Glissmeyer (fourth, 200 free; fourth, 100 fly; sixth, 200 medley relay; ninth, 400 relay), Henry Long (fifth, 500 free; sixth, 200 medley relay; sixth, 200 free; ninth, 400 free relay), Duke (sixth, 200 medley relay; seventh, 500 free; ninth, 400 free relay), Cole Crimmins (sixth, 200 medley relay), Fenwick (ninth, girls 200 medley relay; 10th, 100 back), Raej Johansen (ninth, boys 400 free relay), Ellie Moss (ninth, girls 200 medley relay), Zoe Nielson (ninth, girls 200 medley relay) and Arianna Steuart (ninth, girls 200 medley relay).
