Davis boys basketball off to good start to 2023–24 season

Early reviews are positive for the Davis boys basketball team.

It’s early—very early—but the Darts won their first two games, both by 19 points over solid competition. Coming off somewhat of a rebuilding season, Davis is looking to regain more of its 2021–22 form when it finished 22-2 overall. Last season, Davis was 14-12.

The Darts opened the new season Nov. 20 at home against fellow Class 6A foe Copper Hills, winning convincingly 79-60. Davis shot better than 50% from the field and scored at least 15 points in every quarter. Meanwhile, Davis held Copper Hills to just 42% shooting from the floor and limited the Grizzlies to 26 first-half points in building a 12-point advantage at the break.

Three Davis players hit double figures in scoring, led by Ike Morgan, who had 18. Coleman Atwater had 17 points, as he and Morgan each knocked down three shots from three-point range. Zach Fisher, scored 15 points for the Darts while leading the team with eight rebounds. Morgan paced the team in assists with five. Easton Ralphs and Tradon Bessinger were close to double figures, each getting eight points. Bessinger and Atwater contributed five rebounds, while Fisher also stuffed the stat sheet by adding four assists and three steals.

The next day, Davis was at it again, this time on the road against West Jordan. In similar fashion, the Darts dispatched the Jaguars with little trouble, winning 69-50. Davis was up 13-4 after the first quarter and 32-16 at halftime. The Darts held steady in the second half while allowing plenty of players a chance to get on the floor. Davis made twice as many free throws as West Jordan (24–12) and outshot the Jaguars 48% to 35% from the floor.

Atwater and Fisher both had big games.

Fisher had a double-double, compiling 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. He also had a steal and a block. Atwater, meanwhile, led all players with 20 points and chipped in five rebounds and two steals. Six other Darts scored in the rout. Caleb Taylor was the leader in assists and steals with four and three, respectively, while also finishing second in rebounds with six.

Davis had a challenging task on Tuesday against Pleasant Grove. Results were unavailable at press time. The Darts host Highland on Dec. 1 when they play the first of seven games of the month.
