NORTH SALT LAKE—Former Utah House Representative and Davis County resident Becky Edwards announced last week the formation of the Governing Group PAC. The group will focus on giving potential candidates financial and organizational assistance and resources.

“It’s exciting,” said Edwards. “The idea grew way back when I was in the Senate race. I was going around the state talking to a lot of folks.”

There were people, especially women, who had thought about running but didn't have the resources to help put up lawn signs, gather signatures, etc., she said. “We needed an in-depth strategy and resources that people could reach out to. Now is the time. We have the enthusiasm that I think we need to accomplish this through financial contribution and pairing it with resources.”

It’s a unique overlay of opportunities with individual mentoring and coaching, Edwards said. “We must take an in-depth look at the barriers women face when running for office. A PAC at the core is a way to pool resources and help candidates in a more significant way.”

There is a desire and a hunger from the people around the state, she said. “Enough to make an impact on the discussion and the process.”

There is a groundswell of support, said Edwards. “People are anxious to have their voices heard. At the heart they want something civil and solution based. I’m anticipating that will be what we hear overwhelmingly.”

Be on the lookout for women in the community who may not be seen in leadership roles, she said. “They may already be working collaboratively in their faith community or schools. Encourage them.”

Edwards said her father-in-law, former BYU football coach LaVell Edwards is an example of what she hopes to offer. “He was a coach for 30 years and the number of players he impacted was in the hundreds.”

He supported excellent athletes throughout the country, she said. “I want to model the lessons learned of the power of coaching and mentoring and what you do with that.”

The Governing Group has a goal of raising $50,000 to jumpstart its efforts, said Edwards. “Our next goal is bigger at $100,000 as we grow. We’re in it for the long haul. We want to be a force for good in the long run in Utah.”

Edwards calls on Utahns who desire a civil and results-focused, political climate to make a financial donation or volunteer. “People have reached out and said ‘I loved working on your campaign,’” she said. “They have already talked to a fair amount of people and are good at it or they do it for like minded candidates. We’ll match up volunteers with candidates they want to work with.”

This is going to change the face of politics through the PAC, she said. “When it was announced I had three women across the state contact me and say, ‘Who do I need to meet with?’ I was so enthused by that.”

This is the answer, said Edwards. “This will be a landing place for those who want to share resources and give of their time. My last plea is – join us – we need you.”
