Region 1 boys basketball teams have ups and downs as holidays draw close

Davis and Farmington had busy weeks on the hardwood, as both boys basketball teams had multiple games.

Following a game this Friday with Mountain Ridge, Farmington will have two weeks off before returning to action Dec. 30 at home against Copper Hills. Davis has a pair of out-of-state games with California foes before playing at Hillcrest on Dec. 20. The Darts then will take Christmas and New Year’s off before their next contest on Jan. 3 against Bingham.

The Phoenix currently sit at 5-2 overall, having gone 1-2 in a trio of games last week. They first fell at Crimson Cliffs on Dec. 7 after falling behind 40-28 at halftime. Farmington battled back in this one, getting to within 54-52 after three quarters. But Crimson Cliffs pulled away in the fourth.

In defeat, Paul Beattie was fantastic for Farmington. The senior posted 30 points and hauled down 11 rebounds. He had three assists, two steals and a block as well. Jayden Haskell also had a nice game, tallying 15 points. Ethan Atkinson was quiet in the scoring column, but he had nine rebounds and five assists.

The following day, Farmington bounced back with a 60-57 victory over Skyridge on the road. This one was close all game long, as neither team gained a big advantage. The Phoenix only shot three free throws, but thanks in large part to Jayden Haskell, they were prolific from three-point land. Haskell knocked down six shots from behind the arc and poured in 29 points. Beattie added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Playing their third game in as many nights, Farmington dropped a 58-49 decision to Herriman on Dec. 9. The Mustangs made 14 free throws to just four for Farmington. The Phoenix also went cold in the fourth quarter, scoring just five points. Farmington was up 44-39 heading into the final period. Ethan Harris was the only Farmington player to score in double figures, totaling 11. Haskell and Beattie each had nine points, while Carter Nordquist and Atkinson had eight apiece.

The Phoenix began this week on the right track, however, defeating Bingham 71-62 on Dec. 12 at home. The Phoenix got off to a good start, outscoring Bingham 14-6 in the first quarter. The Miners turned the tables in the second quarter to cut the margin to one point at 25-24 at halftime. But the third quarter belonged to Farmington, which went on a 24-12 run in the third. The Phoenix missed just two of their 14 free throws and got a monster outing from Beattie. He filled the stat sheet with 33 points and 14 rebounds. Haskell and Braden Larsen each had 14 points, the latter with six rebounds as well.

The Darts were 2-1 last week, with its lone loss coming at the hands of state power Olympus, 61-50 on Dec.9.

In the defeat, the Darts fell behind big early, as they trailed 33-16 at halftime. Davis made a valiant comeback by outscoring Olympus 19-9 in the third quarter. However, the Darts didn’t have enough in the tank to complete the turnaround and pull out a win. Davis missed all five of its free-throw attempts, though it did shoot nearly 50% from the floor, 20 of 41. Coleman Atwater led Davis with 14 points, while Caleb Taylor and Easton Ralphs each had 11 in the loss.

Leading up to the Olympus game, Davis won a pair of contests, first defeating Box Elder 69-53 on Dec. 7. The 16-point win was especially noteworthy considering how poorly Davis began the game. The Darts were down by a football-like score of 21-7 after one quarter. However, that didn’t last long, as Davis controlled the game the rest of the way. The Darts closed things out with a 25-11 run over the final six minutes. Zach Fisher paced the team with 21 points and nine rebounds. Ike Morgan had 14 points, six assists and four steals. Atwater had another solid game, totaling 10 points and three assists.

The next day, Davis won again, beating Viewmont 54-45 to improve to 4-2. The Darts were in control most of the way and held Viewmont to an icy 36% from the floor.

Fisher had 12 points and six rebounds, while Atwater had 11 points and three boards. Tradon Bessinger nearly had a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.
