The boys basketball schedules are lighter this week, as the Christmas holiday approaches. Last week, Region 5 teams had some action, coming up short in non-league play.

Bountiful

The Redhawks dropped to 4-3 on the year with a pair of losses last week. Bountiful fell to Timpview on Dec. 12, 54-53, and then lost at Timpanogos 54-48 on Dec. 14.

The Timpview contest was a game of runs. The Thunderbirds were up 17-12 after one quarter, but Bountiful bounced back with a 16-9 second-quarter run to go up 28-26 at the break. After a 21-15 third quarter in favor of Timpview, Bountiful came back to nearly pull out the victory. Carson Smith nearly had a double-double, posting 17 points and nine rebounds. The senior forward/center added three assists too. Bryson Heath led the team with seven assists. He also contributed 14 points and three rebounds. Faletau Satuala and Joe Stobbe had nine and eight points, respectively.

Two days later, in the six-point defeat at the hands of Timpanogos, Bountiful hung tough with the undefeated Timberwolves but couldn’t gain the upper hand. Both teams hit 19 field goals, but Timpanogos made eight three-pointers to Bountiful’s four. Smith had 22 points in the loss, while Charlie Smith added 10.

The Redhawks hosted Fremont on Dec. 20 after our press time. The next game isn’t until Jan. 3 at home against Box Elder.

Woods Cross

The Wildcats are wishing for a victory for Christmas.

Last week, Woods Cross had the daunting task of facing two state powers in American Fork and Alta, the latter having won last season’s Class 5A state title. Both contests, however, were lopsided defeats for Woods Cross with American Fork winning 64-37 on Dec. 12 and Woods Cross falling to Alta 86-59 on Dec. 15.

Hunter Jackson had 18 points to lead the Wildcats in scoring against American Fork. He also added four rebounds and a block. Against Alta, Woods Cross fell behind 34-14 after one quarter and had a tough time against the powerful Hawks. Bryson Watson had a bright spot, posting 25 points and knocking down six three-pointers. Jackson tallied 10 points for the Wildcats.

At 0-7, Woods Cross hosted Ridgeline on Dec. 20, after our press time. Before New Year’s, the Wildcats play at Kearns Dec. 29.

Viewmont

The Vikings have 16 days in between games for the Christmas break. The team’s last game was a 69-65 loss at home to Mountain Ridge on Dec. 12. Viewmont will participate in the Utah Autism Classic tournament Dec. 28, 29 against Highland and Olympus.

Viewmont is 1-6 on the season. In its setback against Mountain Ridge, Max Draper led the team with 18 points. Drez Jensen and Kade Cannon added 15 points apiece.
