Car wash causes stir in Kaysville community

KAYSVILLE—Though it has only been open for a a handful of days, a car wash in a local Kaysville neighborhood has been causing quite the stir. While there’s nothing too out of the ordinary that Mister Car Wash is doing, the neighborhood has organized a petition that has garnered nearly 300 signatures.

The cause? According to the change.org petition, many residents are concerned about both the light and noise pollution the business brings to the area. One Kaysville resident, Ron Barton, noted the lights particularly, saying, “At first I thought it was possibly a full moon rising in the sky but then realized that the full moon should have been setting in the west at that time of day.  It took me a while to realize that it was the new car wash.”

For the area, it comes as a bit of a shock. Though it’s been commercially zoned for decades, a house sat on the property until recently, which is why the neighborhood has rallied behind this petition. Jaysen Christensen, City Manager for Kaysville, has said that his office “has been fielding a lot of calls” about the new location, and feels very optimistic about the response from both the city and Mister Car Wash.

Christensen said that representatives from Mister Car Wash came and attended city council meetings in an effort to respond and hear from the residents what they, as a business, can do to meet these challenges. Christensen believes that the business is “very sincere in trying to address these issues,” and has come to these issues with a “very cooperative attitude.

To that end, Mister Car Wash and the city have come up with some solutions that they feel will be fair and equitable to all parties. The car wash is looking into dimming, or turning off altogether the lights on the back side of the building that face the backyards of the neighborhood to cut down on the light pollution.

Christensen said that they have also purchased and will be installing a vacuum muffler to cut down on the noise made by those vacuums and that they have even been asked to consider a screening wall. As City Manager, Jaysen Christensen is confident that, at the very least, Mister Car Wash as a business, wants to be good neighbors, and is willing to put in the time and effort to ensure all parties are satisfied.
