Apr 25, 2024 10:29AM ● By Josh McFadden

The baseball season is in full swing, and Davis County teams in Region 5 are faring quite well.

The top three spots in the region belong to Viewmont, Woods Cross and Bountiful, with plenty of action still left. Viewmont tops the RPI rankings, while Woods Cross and Bountiful are 11th and 18th, respectively.

Viewmont

The 13-3 Vikings were on an 11-game winning streak headed into their Wednesday clash at home against Bonneville.

Viewmont edged Clearfield 9-8 on April 17, outhitting the Falcons 10-9. The way things started out, however, it looked as though Viewmont would run away with a victory. The Vikings jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one inning but didn’t score again until the bottom of the seventh. In between those innings, Clearfield went on a 8-0 scoring spree. When Viewmont got up to bat in the seventh inning, it trailed 8-5. The final at-bat was fruitful for the Vikings, as they came back to win. Jace Barber was the winning pitcher, and he added a pair of strikeouts in the game. Kade Marriot had two RBI for Viewmont.

Viewmont defeated Northridge 12-2 in a lopsided game on April 18. This contest saw Viewmont explode for 16 hits and a run in five of the six innings played. Five of the 12 runs came in second inning. Cal Miller had a big game for the Vikings. The junior hit a home run and a double, and he also drove in three runs. Elias Culley drove in four runs and hit a home run. Boston Williams also hit a double, while Beckham Smith had three RBI.

The Vikings and Clearfield had a rematch last Friday, but this game wasn’t like the previous matchup.

This time, Viewmont crushed the Falcons 10-2, scoring all its runs in the first two innings. Eight of them came in the second, which effectively put the game away early. Culley was the winning pitcher, striking out five batters. Miller was 2–4 from the plate, hitting a home run and a double, while adding two RBI. Marriot had a double and two RBI. Gehrig Lee contributed a double and an RBI.

On Monday, the Vikings had another victory, moving to a perfect 7-0 in region play. The Vikings routed Bonneville 9-1 on the road behind a big five-run third inning. Spencer Rees brought in four runs and was 2–3 hitting. Gage Kortman had two RBI. Smith was the winning pitcher for Viewmont. The junior turned away five batters on the day.

The Vikings hosted Bonneville on Wednesday (after our press time) and play at Woods Cross on Friday. Viewmont and Woods Cross play again on Monday, while the Vikings host Bountiful on May 1.

Woods Cross

The Wildcats are humming along in region play, racing to a second-place mark of 6-1. Overall, the team is 10-8, though it did suffer its first league loss on a 5-3 setback at home to Box Elder on Monday.

Woods Cross fell despite outhitting Box Elder 9-5 Beckham Stanger had six strikeouts in defeat, while three players – Gavin Shupe, Max Moffat and Kason Lythgoe – had RBIs.

Before this loss, the Wildcats had put together multiple blowout wins, including a trio of recent wins. Woods Cross blanked Bonneville in a 20-0 shellacking on April 17. The game only went five innings, and the Wildcats amassed 12 runs in the fourth inning alone. Stanger was sensational in the win. He and his team allowed just two hits, and he struck out 11 batters. Tyler Story had three RBI, and Alex Razee had two doubles and an RBI. Paxton Healy and Stetson Critchley had two RBI apiece.

Woods Cross defeated Roy 11-3 on April 18 after falling behind early 1-0. Pitcher Will Vicchrilli had eight strikeouts for Woods Cross. His teammate, Alexander Holdstock, had a home run and an RBI. Max Moffat had a double and two RBI.

On April 19, Woods Cross and Bonneville met again, two days after the 20-0 slaughter. This game wasn’t quite as one-sided, though the Wildcats still had their way in a 12-3 victory. Story was the winning pitcher in this win, and he impressed with 10 strikeouts and gave up just three hits. Shupe had two doubles, while Beau Blackwell. Critchley, Moffat and Thomas Pattison each had one. Moffat also had three RBI.

Woods Cross played at Box Elder on Wednesday, after our press deadline. The Wildcats host Viewmont on Friday and then play at Viewmont next Monday. On May 1, Woods Cross hosts Northridge.

Bountiful

The Redhawks had some struggles early on but have started 4-3 in league play. Heading into its April 24 game at Clearfield, Bountiful was 7-10 overall.

This past Monday, the Redhawks suffered a 10-0 defeat at the hands of Clearfield. However, on April 17, the Redhawks had a good defensive outing against Northridge in a 2-1 win on the road. Jackson Kyhl was outstanding on the mound. The pitcher had 12 strikeouts and got the win. Krew Nelson had a double and two RBI in the victory.

Bountiful also beat Northridge on April 17. In this game, the Redhawks prevailed 10-4 and had nine hits. Bountiful had three runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. Ben Neuenshwander was the winning pitcher and had two strikeouts. TJ Dahlke had a big game from the plate, hitting a home run and driving in two runs. Tavis Danner had a double and four RBI, while Jefferson Duryea had a double and three RBI.

Bountiful hosts Bonneville on Friday and then plays at Bonneville on Monday. On May 1, the Redhawks travel to Viewmont.
