Viewmont won its first two region games last week while short-handed Farmington was able to win the one game it played. Davis and Bountiful split their two games with Woods Cross losing their one region matchup.

Viewmont

Viewmont defeated Box Elder 57-42 Jan. 12, going up 21-9 early and finishing the half with a 28-14 lead. The Vikings put up another 21 points coming out of the break and cruised to the 15-point win.

“We played great defense again and are finally getting in shape, so our shots were dropping tonight,” head coach Roger Farnsworth said.

Kaisley Larsen, Emma Mulitalo and Kalee Smith combined for eight 3-pointers in scoring 13, 11 and nine points respectively. Also contributing offensively for the Vikings were Lauren Weir (nine points), Grace Mackay (four), Bella Uffens (three), Sophie Mangum (three), Kalli Cannon (three) and Emma Lindsey (two).

Against Bonneville Jan. 15, Viewmont won 56-38 behind strong play to begin the game and go up 27-11 by halftime. The Vikings held off the Lakers’ offensive surge in the second half in the 18-point win.

“We played very good defense,” Farnsworth said.

Mulitalo had a huge game with 23 points while Mackay (12 points), Smith (eight), Larsen (eight), Cannon (three) and Mangum (two) also scored.

Viewmont’s record stands at 9-5 with a 2-0 start to Region 5 play.

Davis

Davis lost to Syracuse 50-32 Jan. 12. The Darts started slow and found themselves down 20-8 after the first quarter, but then they held the Titans to just two points to pull within one at halftime. But, the offense sputtered in the second half with just 11 points in the 18-point loss.

“We didn’t bounce back like I thought we would,” head coach Anne Jones said. “We played a great second  and third quarters, but you have to play all four quarters against a team like Syracuse who is well coached and has both an inside and outside attack.”

Callie Tolman led the way with nine points, Kylee Mabry had eight points, Morgan Burnett (six), Kendra Kitchen (two) and Phoebe Arnold (two).

Against Roy Jan. 15, Davis won 43-29, holding the Royals to just four points in the opening quarters to begin the game and the second half.

“We played some great minutes against a very scrappy and quick Roy team,” Jones said. “They play with a ton of energy and at times we didn’t match their energy, but we were able to get back on the winning track and hopefully that momentum will carry over to this week’s games.”

Kitchen, Burnett and Arnold scored eight points each with Taylor Leavitt (seven points), Mabry (six), Tolman (four) and Sierra Passey also contributing offensively.

The Darts are now 3-2 in Region 1 with a 7-3 overall mark.

Bountiful

Bountiful defeated Bonneville 58-54, breaking open a 16-13 lead to a 32-13 halftime advantage. The Lakers responded in the second with a 41-point performance but the Braves withstood the comeback in winning by four points.

“We had many contributors with Emily Kessler also stepping in and playing big for us defensively,” head coach Joel Burton said.

Emrie Satuala led Bountiful with 24 points with Jordyn Harvey (12 points), Lizzy McConkie (nine), Esther Broom (four), Claire Cook (three), Evi Chism (three), Hailey Fouts (two) and Kessler (one).

Against Farmington Jan. 14, the Braves lost 45-23. The teams were close after one – with the Phoenix holding an 8-7 edge and then led 16-9 at halftime. An 18-point third quarter opened the game up for Farmington.

“We played alright defensively, but really struggled putting the ball in the basket,” Burton said.

Satuala had seven points to lead the Braves’ scorers with McConkie (four points), Johnson (four), Harvey (four), Fouts (two) and Broom (two) also on the board.

Bountiful is 9-4 this season and 1-1 in Region 5 play.

Woods Cross

Woods Cross was able to play one game last week – against Box Elder – with the Wildcats’ coming up short 36-29. The game was close at halftime as Woods Cross was down four points, but the Bees outscored the Wildcats by three in the second half to win by seven.

“We played another pretty good defensive game,” head coach David Simon said. “We lost a tough one and we are still trying to figure out how to get some more points on the board. The one thing that my girls are doing so well is competing and playing hard. I am super proud of them for that.”

Kenna Cowley led the way with eight points while Macy Richards (seven), Emily Muhlestein (six), Sofia Mokofisi (five), Annie Michaelis (two) and Kelly King (one) also scored.

Woods Cross is 0-1 in Region 5 with a 4-5 record on the year.

Farmington

Farmington’s first region game, scheduled for Jan. 12 against Woods Cross, was postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Phoenix program.

Coach Van Price had enough players to play against Bountiful Jan. 14 and Farmington won 45-23.

“The girls played great defense by holding Bountiful’s leading scorers (Satuala and Harvey) well below their scoring averages and also holding the team to only 23 points,” Price said.
Abigail Ferrell recorded 12 points, eight steals, five rebounds and four assists to lead Farmington while Delaney Baker (11 points), Haley McFarland (10), Valerie Kunzler (nine) and Brooklyn Marchant (three) also scored for the Phoenix.

Farmington is now 8-1 and 1-0 in the region standings.
