Davis, Farmington march to state boys basketball quarterfinals

Mar 08, 2021 02:19PM ● By Tom Haraldsen

After one week of state playoff action, three local teams have bowed out, ending their season. But Davis and Farmington have marched on, just two games from reaching the Class 6A and 5A title games, respectively.

Davis

As the No. 7 seed in 6A, Davis secured a first-round bye and then drew fellow Region 1 foe Layton in the second round at home, Feb. 26.

The third matchup of the year between the two rivals was a defensive, down-to-the-wire affair.

The Darts moved to 19-4 on the season with a 41-39 victory. Davis had to overcome a slow start, and trailed virtually the entire game as well. Layton was up 11-2 after the first six minutes. After Davis trimmed the margin to five points at halftime (20-15), Layton maintained that advantage and led 30-25 after three quarters.

The fourth quarter belonged to Davis, which beat the Lancers for the second time on the year.

Davis outscored Layton 16-9 in the fourth quarter and wound up prevailing despite leading for less than one minute the entire way. Chance Trujillo had 10 points and four steals, while Rex Sunderland hit the game winner with three seconds remaining, breaking a 39-39 tie. Henry Ihrig had seven points and nine rebounds.

Neither team shot well – from the field or the foul line. Davis was just 3–8 from the foul line and 16–36 from the floor. Layton was a little better on field goals, going 14 of 30. However, the Lancers were below 50% from the foul line at 7–15.

The win moved Davis to the quarterfinals on Tuesday where it faced second-seeded Pleasant Grove on the road. The game took place after our press deadline. The winner would advance to the semifinals on Thursday at Salt Lake Community College.

Farmington

The Phoenix won two games to reach the quarterfinals, both by double-digits. At 17-7, Farmington played at home against Mountain View on Wednesday, after our press deadline.

Farmington started off the state tournament on Feb. 24 with a lopsided 78-57 win over Spanish Fork. The Phoenix displayed an efficient offense, scoring 25 points in the first quarter and totaling 43 in the first half while building a 13-point halftime lead. Spanish Fork never threatened in the second half.

Collin Chandler had a solid all-around performance. The junior had 23 points and added five rebounds and five assists. Truman Hendry had 15 points and four rebounds, while Tanner Nordquist had 11 points.

Two days later, the fourth-seeded Phoenix defeated 20th-seeded Highland 66-54 in what may have been a tougher-than-expected game over the 9-12 Rams. The Phoenix never blew the game wide open but did maintain a good cushion throughout the contest. It was 30-23 at halftime and 47-36 after three quarters. Chandler had 19 points and four rebounds, and Paul Beattie contributed 10 points. Hendry, Caleb Mordue and Sam Rencher each chipped in nine points.

A Farmington victory in the quarterfinals would send the team to the semifinals at Salt Lake Community College on Friday.

Viewmont

The Vikings prevailed in their first-round game, Feb. 24 at home against Wasatch, by the count of 46-37.

The 14th-seeded Vikings improved to 13-11 with the win, which was sealed with a 17-10 fourth quarter. Viewmont led just 29-27 after three quarters but made sure its stay in the state tournament would be a little longer. Radek Pulsipher had 13 points, and John Barnes had 11 points and five rebounds. Scott Noel added 10 points and seven rebounds.

On Feb. 26, Viewmont had trouble with third-seeded Lehi on the road, falling 69-44. Viewmont was within six points – 33-27– at halftime, but a second-half blitz from Lehi shut the door on the Vikings. Emery paced the team with 14 points and four assists. Noel had 11 points and three rebounds in the team’s final game of the season.

Bountiful

The Braves grabbed the No. 10 seed in the 5A tournament and had a home game with 23rd-seeded Orem on Feb. 24. The home-court advantage wasn’t enough to stave off an upset.

Orem prevailed 60-58, thanks to a 20-12 run in the fourth quarter. Up to that point, Bountiful was in control. The Braves were up 27-22 at halftime and 46-40 entering the fourth quarter. Bountiful couldn’t hold on despite 27 points from Robert Whaley. Austin Cooper chipped in 12 points as the Braves concluded their season with a 12-12 mark.

Woods Cross

The Wildcats were also one-and-done in the 5A tournament, losing in the first round at home against Salem Hills 67-58.

Woods Cross was up 8-4 after a low-scoring first quarter. That advantage climbed to 25-14 at halftime. From there, it was all Salem Hills, which tallied 53 points in the second half – an eye-opening turnaround. Woods Cross, meanwhile, scored 33 during that same span.

Mason Bendinger has 17 points for Woods Cross, followed by Jaxon Smith and Zach Delange, who had 13 and 11, respectively.

Woods Cross ended its season with a 10-12 record.
