Prep boys soccer season underway

Mar 18, 2021 10:45AM ● By Josh McFadden

It’s not technically spring yet, but the spring high school sports season is underway. And plenty of prep athletes have been raring to go since COVID-19 cut last year’s season considerably short.

Davis County boys soccer teams have all gotten games under their belts. Davis, in Region 1, already has played a league contest. The Darts, along with Viewmont, Farmington, Woods Cross and Bountiful, have all registered wins in the early going.

Davis

Because of its larger region – eight teams – Davis plays just two non-league games and starts region play earlier than many teams around the state. At press time, the Darts were 1-1-1 and 0-1 in Region 1.

Davis fell to Weber 2-0 last Friday in a road game that saw the Warriors score once in each half. The two teams had split the season series two years ago after not meeting in last year’s shortened campaign.

Prior to its region opener, Davis blew out Logan at home 7-0 on March 9. The offense got rolling early to the tune of five first-half goals. In all, five Darts scored, led by Simon Jensen, who found the back of the net three times. Goalie Jude Walker got the shutout.

Davis and Viewmont played to a 1-1 tie on the Vikings’ home field March 11. The game only lasted a half, as snowfall made it difficult to continue the match. Jensen scored for Davis, while Taison Yoshida had Viewmont’s goal.

Davis hosted Roy on Tuesday and next faced Northridge on the road on Thursday.

Viewmont

Aside from tying Davis, the Vikings picked up two wins in the early going. Viewmont opened the season with a 1-0 win over Ridgeline on March 9 and a thrilling 3-2 double-overtime victory over Taylorsville on Monday.

In game one, Hunter Rast scored on a Ben Gladwell assist. Goalkeeper Jarek Burnett got the shutout.

Viewmont appeared to be in good shape against Taylorsville, as the Vikings were up 2-0 at halftime thanks to a pair of goals from Gladwell. However, two Taylorsville goals in the second half sent the contest into extra time. In the second overtime, Gladwell found the net again, clinching the win for Viewmont to move its record to 2-0-1.

The Vikings will try to stay undefeated this week. The team played at Lone Peak on Wednesday and next host Corner Canyon on Friday. The first Region 5 game is March 23 at home against Bountiful.

Farmington

The Phoenix won their first two games, both by two goals. The team opened up with a 2-0 victory over Copper Hills on March 9. Farmington then had a strong offensive showing in a 4-2 win at home against Snow Canyon.

Against Copper Hills, the Phoenix scored once in each half. Chandler Gunn ended up with a goal and an assist. Teammate Cameron Bingham had the team’s other goal. Sophomore goalie Adam Esobosa earned the shutout.

Snow Canyon provided some challenges for the Farmington defense, but the offense was up to the task against the Washington County squad. Bingham tallied three goals, while Gunn had a goal and an assist. Braydon Gipson and Abe Ashby had assists as well.

Farmington hosted West Jordan on Tuesday and next entertained Region 6’s Olympus on Thursday.

Woods Cross

The Wildcats are also 2-0 as of our press deadline. Both wins were in heart-stopping fashion.

On March 9, the Wildcats prevailed over Class 6A foe American Fork 2-1 in overtime. After a scoreless first half, both teams had goals in the second to send the game to overtime. Woods Cross got a goal to seal the win in the extra session. Jagger West and Landon Ward got the Wildcats’ goals.

On March 12, Woods Cross and Orem couldn’t decide the contest in regulation or overtime, so the game went into a shootout, usually reserved for playoff action. Both teams scored two goals in the first half, but the defenses clamped down in the second half and in both overtime periods. Woods Cross edged the Tigers 5-4 in a thrilling shootout, giving the Wildcats a hard-earned win. Landon Bott had both of Woods Cross’ goals in the opening half.

The Wildcats took on Bear River on Wednesday, followed by a game at home against Granger on Friday.

Bountiful

The Braves will host West on Friday, their only game of the week. Bountiful is 1-1-1 on the young season.

Bountiful ousted East 3-1 on March 9, thanks to an impressive three-goal second half. Dallin Burgin had a pair of goals for the Braves, while Javier Moreno had the other one. Alex Mower picked up an assist.

Layton edged Bountiful in a shootout on March 11 after the two teams were deadlocked 1-1 after regulation. Burgin scored for the Braves, but the Lancers won the shootout 4-2 to take the win.

On March 12, Clearfield scored two goals in each half to defeat the Braves 4-3 in a high-scoring affair. Bountiful had two first-half goals but couldn’t quite match Clearfield’s output in the second half. Burgin, Javier Moreno and Payton Paxton had goals for the Braves.
