Sips Drive-thru named SBDC Business of the Year

KAYSVILLE—The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Davis Technical College has named Sips Caffeine Bar and Drive-thru (Sips) as the 2020 Business of the Year for Davis and Morgan Counties. It’s located at 2223 South Main Street in Bountiful, on the north side of Slim Olson’s.

Mathew Perry, the owner of Sips, has worked extensively to start and grow his business. Perry’s advice to entrepreneurs is to have passion and persistence.

“Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to open my own business,” said Perry in a release from the SBDC. “When I founded Sips in 2002, it was a small kiosk-style drive-thru in a Kmart parking lot.”

Over the years, Perry has learned how to pivot to keep his business relevant. In response to COVID-19, he quickly implemented strict sanitation protocols to limit contact between employees and customers. As a result, Sips stayed open and brought in a new influx of repeat customers as competing businesses were forced to close.

After making safety a priority, Perry focused on enhancing his business model by providing customized, friendly, and convenient drive-thru services. Sips’ “Hug-In-A-Cup” slogan is based on delivering custom-designed caffeinated beverages to help customers embrace their day.

The Kaysville SBDC has been instrumental in providing Perry with numerous resources and advising services to expand his business, he said.

“The Kaysville SBDC has helped me take my business to the next level,” said Perry. “I look forward to the many years of support, and I consider them an invaluable asset.”

In March 2021, Perry is opening a second, larger Sips location in Clearfield. Between 2021 and 2022, Perry plans to build two more stores in the Davis County and Weber County area.

“Opening my own business is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” said Perry. “However, it’s worth it because it’s something I’m passionate about.”
