While Davis County boys soccer teams took some time off for spring break two weeks ago, they were back on the pitch this past week. But there were some unfamiliar opponents.

Region 5 teams took on some non-league opponents after playing just a game or two against region foes.

Woods Cross

The 5-3 Wildcats began this week with a 1-1 Region 1 record. Woods Cross has been strong on the offensive end, compiling 15 goals in its eight games, second-most in the region.

Both of last week’s games came against teams from Class 6A’s Region 3. First up was Copper Hills, which made it to the 6A state championship during the most recent full season in 2019. The Wildcats couldn’t generate much offense against the Grizzlies on April 6 in a 2-0 shutout. Copper Hills scored a goal in each half, making it the second time the Wildcats had been held without a goal this week.

However, the same thing happened two days later against Bingham: a scoreless effort from the Wildcats. Bingham scored in the second half to avoid overtime and won 1-0.

This week, Woods Cross is back in Region 5 action. The team first played at Box Elder on April 13, followed by a home contest with Viewmont on April 16.

So far on the year, Landon Ward leads the squad in both goals and assists with five and three, respectively.

Viewmont

The Vikings had just one game last week, a 3-1 non-region victory over West. It improved the team’s record to 4-3-1 overall.

In the win on April 9, Viewmont scored twice in the first half to put some distance between itself and the Panthers. Three players registered goals: Collin Tullis, Cam Duke, and Kenyon Grange. It was the first goal of the season for each of those three team members. Coming into the contest, Ben Gladwell had four goals to pace the Vikings.

Back in Region 5 play this week, where the team is 1-1, Viewmont hosted Bonneville on April 13, after our press deadline. Friday’s game at Woods Cross is the first matchup between the two teams since April 30, 2019.

Bountiful

In its lone game last week, the Braves took on a Class 6A opponent from Region 3. And the game was a dramatic one.

Playing at Riverton, Dax Palmer and Dallin Burgin each scored goals, matching a pair scored by the Silverwolves in regulation. The game went into a shootout where Riverton ultimately prevailed with a 3-2 advantage. With the tough defeat, the Braves fell to 3-4 on the year.

Bountiful began this week’s games with a 1-1 region mark. After playing at Farmington on Tuesday, the Braves travel to Box Elder to take on the Bees on Friday.

Farmington

The Phoenix have had a long spell away from games. Before its home game with Bountiful on Tuesday, after our press deadline, the team hadn’t played since March 26.

Farmington is 4-3 overall and 0-2 in Region 5. Goalkeeper Adam Esobosa has recorded three shutouts, and Cameron Bingham had dive goals and three assists through seven games. Chandler Gun chipped in three goals during that span.

Davis

The Darts were 1-0 last week, raising their Region 1 record to 4-2. The team is 5-2-1 overall and is right in the thick of things of the region race, just a game and a half behind league-leading Weber.

On April 8, the Darts shut out Syracuse 1-0 on the road, thanks in large part to the play of goalie Jude Walker and his backline teammates. Simon Jensen scored in the second half to avoid having to go to extra time. It was Walker’s third shutout of the season and team-high eighth goal of the campaign.

Davis looked to extend its winning streak to four games when it hosted Layton on Tuesday.
