Spring prep sports got underway in earnest in late March and April. Through mid-April, our press deadline, here’s a look at how the Wildcats are doing in several sports.

Baseball

Woods Cross started the year with a 10-0 victory over Kearns. From there, the preseason was hit and miss. The Cats lost to Davis 8-3, beat Fremont 9-4, and lost to Dixie 6-4. Woods Cross then won four in a row, beating Roy 13-5, Syracuse 6-5, Orem 6-2 and Herriman 9-8. In both the Syracuse and Herriman wins, the Wildcats scored walk-off victories in the seventh.

Farmington ended the streak with a 21-6 thrashing on April 13. Woods Cross beat the Phoenix 8-7 and then 6-1 in the final two games of their three game set. That left Woods Cross with a record of 8-3 entering games with Bonneville in late April. Blake Stanger is 3-1 on the mound for Woods Cross, and also leads the team with 2 home runs, 7 doubles and 20 RBIs.

Softball

The Lady Wildcats are 4-9 as of press time. The season began with a 10-0 win over Roy, and preseason saw a 9-2 loss to Weber, a 14-4 win over Taylorsville, losses to Layton (9-6) and Clearfield (8-1), then a 20-4 win over Olympus.

Woods Cross lost to Davis 13-2 on April 5. Ali Ebberts and Libby Clark drove in the Wildcats’ runs.

Against Skyridge April 6, the Wildcats lost 16-0. The game was just 1-0 after the first inning before the Falcons scored 15 runs in the second to essentially end the three-inning matchup.

With its fifth consecutive loss, Woods Cross was 3-8 overall and 0-2 in Region 5 standings. The Wildcats lost to Bountiful 15-0 on April 13 but then beat Bonneville 10-6 on April 15 and are now 4-9 overall, 1-3 in league play as of our press deadline.

Team leaders are Autumn Johnson with 3 homers and 7 RBIs, and Ali Ebberts with 1 home run, 21 doubles and 16 RBIs. Ebberts is also 2-1 on the mound.

Boys soccer

Woods Cross was 6-4 on the season through games of April 16.Woods Cross has been strong on the offensive end, compiling 16 goals in its 10 games, second-most in the region.

Two April games came against teams from Class 6A’s Region 3. First up was Copper Hills, which made it to the 6A state championship during the most recent full season in 2019. The Wildcats couldn’t generate much offense against the Grizzlies on April 6 in a 2-0 shutout. Copper Hills scored a goal in each half, making it the second time the Wildcats had been held without a goal this week.

However, the same thing happened two days later against Bingham: a scoreless effort from the Wildcats. Bingham scored in the second half to avoid overtime and won 1-0.

Woods Cross got back in Region 5 action with a 1-0 win at Box Elder on April 13, then dropped a 1-0 double-overtime loss to Viewmont on April 16. So far on the year, Landon Ward leads the squad in both goals and assists with five and four, respectively. Keeper Michael Williams has two shutouts.

Lacrosse

Woods Cross boys are 1-7 on the year following a 10-7 loss to Viewmont on April 16. They also dropped a 7-2 decision to Box Elder on April 14. Coach Josh Hanks is praising his team for their efforts in this first-year program, adding that goalie Not Aguayo has been playing great.

The Lady Wildcats are 2-3 on the season as of press time. They beat Bonneville 10-2 on March 13, and defeated Bountiful 12-9 on March 25. Their last game before press time was a 12-8 loss to Box Elder on April 13.
