Over the next two weeks, all class 5A and 6A boys soccer teams will vie for a shot at the state title. Only one team will emerge in each classification as the champion, but as of May 14, when the tournament got underway, everyone had a shot.

Davis

The Darts caught fire at the end of the regular season, winning their last five games to finish 11-3 in Region 1 and 12-3-1 overall. The team finished in second place, behind undefeated Weber.

The final week of the regular season was a successful one for Davis. The team got by Layton 2-1 on May 4. Wyatt Sanders had two goals, both assisted by Kevin Barnes. Two days later, the Darts blitzed Fremont 8-0, thanks largely to three goals from Sanders. Simon Jensen had a goal and two assists. Jude Walker got the shutout.

On Monday, Davis beat Syracuse 2-1 on the strength of Jerick Sparrow’s two goals.

Jensen and Sanders were a potent scoring duo this season for Davis. Jensen had 11 goals in the regular season, and Sanders added nine. Jensen also paced the team with five assists.

Bountiful

The Braves won Region 5 by going 7-3 in league play. Bountiful finished the regular season 9-6 overall. Close games have been common for the Braves, as they won their last four games of the season – each by a single goal. Their two games before that streak ended in shootouts.

Last week, Bountiful beat Box Elder at home, 1-0 on May 4, and then outlasted Bonneville on the road 1-0 on May 7. Dallin Burgin scored against Box Elder, while Max Barlow got the team’s goal in the regular season finale. Goalkeeper Parker Hayford got the shutout against Bonneville. He shared those honors with Cole Ingles in the game against Box Elder.

Farmington

With a 6-4 mark in Region 5, the Phoenix shared second place with Viewmont. Farmington ended the regular season and prepared for postseason play on a good note.

The Phoenix routed Bonneville 5-0 on May 4, scoring four of their goals after halftime. Abe Ashby had a goal and two assists, while Braydon Gipson, Coleman Stetler, Cameron Bingham and Austin Argyle each added a goal.

On May 7 at home against Woods Cross, Farmington had another strong second half. This time the team scored three times after the break for a 4-1 victory. Again, multiple players scored, as Kannon Hill, Chandler Gunn, Gipson and Bingham registered goals.

The Phoenix entered the state tournament with a record of 10-5.

Viewmont

Also at 6-4 in league play, the Vikings will begin the state playoff with three losses in their final five games. Last week, the team went 1-1.

First was a 1-0 home loss to Woods Cross on May 4, followed by a 3-1 victory over Box Elder three days later. In the win, the Vikings scored all their goals in the first half, with Dalin Jewett, Collin Tullis and Brighton Allen finding the back of the net. Viewmont is 9-7 overall.

No Viking scored more than Ben Gladwell’s five goals. However the team did get contributions on the scoring sheet from 10 other players, including three goals from Kenyon Grange.

Woods Cross

It has been an up-and-down season for the 5-5 Wildcats. The team is 9-7 overall as the playoffs start.

Last week, Luke Thompson scored a second-half goal in the team’s 1-0 win over Viewmont. Michael Williams got the shutout in the goal.

On May 7, Woods Cross fell to Farmington 5-1, keeping the team from a chance to place second in region play.
