Bountiful’s win over Box Elder sealed an undefeated Region 5 season for the Braves. Davis, Viewmont and Woods Cross saw their seasons end in the early rounds of the state tournament while Bountiful and Farmington begin state this week after byes in the first and second rounds.

Bountiful

Bountiful defeated Box Elder 3-0 May 11 in a rescheduled matchup due to COVID cases on the Bees squad. The game was scoreless through two innings before the Braves got on the board with two runs in the third and then added another run in the fourth.

“The highlight was the pitching of Shambre Maestas as she took a no-hitter into the top of the seventh inning,” said head coach Butch Latey.

Maestas gave up two hits and then Annie Salazar finished the game to preserve the shutout. Annie Salazar went 3-for-3, driving in two runs while Carli Sexton also had an RBI for the Braves who had 10 hits as a team.

Bountiful had first and second round byes in the 5A state tournament so they will begin their state run May 20-21 against Orem.

Farmington

Farmington lost to Davis 5-1 May 11, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to avoid the shutout.

Paige Herbon drove in the team’s only run.

Farmington had first and second round byes in the 5A state tournament so they begin state play May 20-21 against Payson.

Davis

Davis defeated Farmington 5-1 May 11, turning a 1-0 lead into a decisive spread with a four-run sixth inning. The Phoenix scored its lone run in the seventh inning to avoid the shutout.

“We had a great team effort to get the big win,” said head coach Todd Street. “We made a number of great plays in the field. Everyone is starting to own their position defensively. We had a lot of great at-bats.”

Alix Thaxton and Ellie Anderson both recorded an RBI for the Darts. Nina Attanasio was the winning pitcher.

“Our pitching was outstanding with Nina Attanasio going all seven innings for the win,” Street said. “We are playing our best ball leading into the state tournament this week.”

The Darts played Copper Hills in a best-of-three series in the first round of the 6A state tournament. On May 15, Davis lost to Copper Hills 14-13, going down 11-4 after four innings before exploding for eight runs in the fifth inning. But the Darts gave up the winning run in the bottom half of the seventh inning.

Thaxton led Davis with four RBIs while Anderson (three RBIs), Avery Kartchner (two RBIs) and Emily Dent (one RBI) also drove in runs.

In game two of the first round against Copper Hills, the Darts lost 10-0, ending its season with a 5-16 record.

“We started out the season with our main goal of getting better each day,” Street said. “The girls worked their tails off every day and we were a much better team at the end of the year than we were at the beginning. We pulled off big wins over Weber and Farmington at the end of the year.”

Street noted the contributions of seniors Anderson, Dent and Abby Clark who “were amazing all year long.”

Viewmont

Viewmont lost to Box Elder 15-3 May 10. The Vikings were down early before coming back to take a 3-1 lead in the third inning, but they surrendered 13 runs over the final two innings in the big loss. Lily Wright, Oakley Sovic and Jenavieve Eggett had RBIs for Viewmont.

Against Taylorsville May 11, Viewmont lost 13-11. The Vikings came out strong with eight runs through the first two innings – and leading by five runs – before the Warriors had multi-run innings and tied up the game 9-all by the end of the sixth inning. Taylorsville scored in the eighth to end the game.

“It was a great game. The team played well,” said head coach Stacie Toney. “Molly [Roberts] and Grace [Nielson] worked well together pitching, We were seeing the ball well. The game could’ve gone either way. It was a fun one to play.”

Savana Walker had three RBIs to lead Viewmont while Kennedy Embrey (two RBIs), Sovic (one RBI), Eggett (one RBI), Roberts (one RBI) and Lily Hawker (one RBI) also contributed offensively.

In the first round of the 5A state playoffs, Viewmont defeated Provo 22-7 May 14, blowing open a 2-2 tie after the first inning with a 15-run burst in the second inning and five more to finish off the Bulldogs in the final inning.

“This was just what this team needed,” Toney said. “Anna Moore had a great day, going three-for-three with a home run. She needed that as she’s been in a little slump the past few weeks. It’s good to see her bat come back.”

Walker led the Vikings with eight RBIs. Also contributing offensively were Wright and Moore with three RBIs, Sovic two and Eggett, Roberts and Embrey one each.

“We need to be great with runners in scoring position and we executed that well,” Toney said. In the second round, Viewmont lost to Orem 17-0 May 15 in four innings and then lost 14-4 May 17 to end a 7-15 season.

“We held strong, but just couldn’t finish,” Toney said. “I’m proud of how we played and finished the season. These girls left everything out on the field. We got better every day. These girls are a special group and it is tough to say goodbye to the seniors. It’s been a pleasure to coach them this year.”

Woods Cross

Woods Cross lost to Mountain Ridge 12-2, going down 12-0 before scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to avoid the shutout. Mekenna Trader and Callie Jeppesen both drove in a run for the Wildcats.

In the second round of the 5A state playoffs, Woods Cross lost to Salem Hills 13-10 May 15. The Wildcats went down three runs early before tying the game in the third inning. They then got down by four more runs before again tying the game at 7-all in the fifth. But, they surrendered six more runs in the final two innings to lose by three.

“It was a really good game,” said head coach Casey Plowman. “It was a fight back and forth the whole game.”

Libby Clark hit a three-run homer with Ali Ebberts (two RBIs), Jade Valdez (one RBI), Makenna Trader (one RBI), Kate Massey (one RBI) and Kenna Cowley (one RBI) also driving in runs.

On May 17, the Wildcats came out strong, leading 3-2 after the first inning, but four late runs weren’t enough in a 19-9 loss to end a 9-14 year. Trader, who played her final high school game, and Clark hit home runs in the team’s finale.

“Salem Hills is a great team who hit the ball really well. This was a fun series for us and glad we had this opportunity,” Plowman said. “We ended on a high note with lots to highlight and be proud of. I’m very proud of the team this year. We had lots of ups and downs, and we finished strong against a strong team. We can walk away with our head held high!”
