West Bountiful imposes water restrictions

Jul 08, 2021 01:22PM ● By Julie Thompson

As Utah experiences the worst drought in decades, state and local government officials have found it necessary to take measures beyond simply asking people to conserve water. In response to the impending crisis, West Bountiful City Council passed Resolution #496-21, effective June 11.

The resolution includes restricting daytime watering to before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.  Residents may only water twice per week, which is defined as 20 minutes of overhead spray or 40 minutes of rotor spray per watering. The resolution recommends lawn mowers should be set to a height of 2.5-3 inches and lawns should be mowed frequently in order to prevent more than one-third of the blade of grass from being removed in a single mowing. A recommendation for new sod landscape projects to be delayed until 2022 is also included.

According to slowtheflow.org, mowers should be raised to 3-4 inches and in additional to the watering restrictions imposed by the city resolution, residents should avoid watering while during windy periods and focus their watering on shrubs, trees, perennial and annual plants.  Grass is resilient and recovers quickly after periods of drought.
