LAYTON—Much like a repeat of the Davis District Championships the week before, Farmington’s boys and girls cross country teams dominated the field at the Region 1 finals held in Layton City Park on Oct. 5.

The Phoenix boys, two-time defending state champions in 5A but now competing in 6A, won the team title with a huge 56-point victory over second-place Davis. Farmington finished with 16 points, just one point off a “perfect” score of 15. In cross country, low scores win as places of finish are added together from the first five placed runners for a team. So a perfect finish, where all five runners are in the top five, would be 15.

The Lady Phoenix runners took first with a score of 44 points, while Layton and Davis finished with 68. Layton was awarded second because its sixth finisher was higher than that of the Darts.

Farmington had the top four boys finishers, led by senior Ryan Bennett who finished in a time of 15:15.28. He was followed by senior teammates Ethan Peterson (15:16.43), Britton Austin (15:18.29), and Isaac Halverson (15:27.42). Weber junior Andrew Harris was fifth at 15:35.13, while Farmington junior Spencer Bradshaw was sixth at 15:41.53.

Rounding out the top 10 were Davis senior Jacob Jones (7th, 15:41.85), Davis senior Tyler Spencer (8th, 15:47.95), Farmington senior Matthew Neuenschwander (9th, 15:53.52) and Farmington senior Drew Hildreth (10th, 15:55.90).

Behind Farmington in team scoring were Davis 69, Weber 70, Fremont 98, Clearfield 168, Syracuse 168 and Layton 173.

In the girls’ varsity race, Layton junior Hayley Low took first at 18:01.97. Farmington senior Chloe Christy was second at 18:23.39, Davis senior Ellie Zaugg was third at 18:25.64, Davis junior Kenedy Maudsley was fourth at 18:43.47, and Farmington senior Allison Dalton was fifth at 18:52.81. Farmington freshman Skye Siddoway finished sixth at 18:54.22.

Farmington won the girls title at 44, followed by Layton and Davis at 68, Weber 76, Fremont 147, Syracuse 148 and Clearfield at 190.

Divisional races were slated for Oct. 12 but results were not available by our press deadline. After that, teams will prepare for the Utah State Cross Country Championships set for Oct. 27 at the Rose Park Complex, the first time finals have been held at that site.
