Region volleyball play winding down

Woods Cross picked up two key Region 5 wins last week, including one over fourth-ranked Bountiful. The Redhawks and Davis split their two matches, with Farmington and Viewmont also picking up wins this week.

Woods Cross

Woods Cross picked up a big win over Bountiful Oct. 19 in four sets, winning the first two and closing out a tight fourth set 26-24. The final score was 25-22, 25-23, 14-25, 26-24 for Woods Cross.

The Wildcats were led by Olivia Ruy with 17 kills and Lauren Bodily with 11. Camille Clark served up three aces and Akilisi Pahulu ran the offense with 41 assists. Danielle Sullivan had 10 blocks while Nora Campbell got 21 digs to go with Saane Katoa 17, Ruy 15 and Pahulu 10.

Against Box Elder Oct. 21, Woods Cross won 25-7, 19-25, 25-10, 25-8 behind a combined 29 kills from Ruy and Katoa. Katoa recorded six aces with Campbell adding five of the team’s 17. Bodily stuffed 15 blocks at the net and of the Wildcats’ 60 digs, Ruy had 17, Campbell 16 and Katoa 10.

The Wildcats are now 7-2 in Region 5 and 17-4 this season.

Bountiful

Bountiful lost its first Region 5 match this year to Woods Cross. Jordyn and Taylor Harvey teamed up for 26 kills to lead the Redhawks while Jordyn Harvey and Halle Hewitt combined for seven of the team’s 10 aces from the serving line. Defensively, Taylor Harvey led at the net with five blocks with Evi Chism recording three. Elle Burleson had 17 digs, along with Jordyn Harvey’s 13, Chism’s 11 and Mia Ray’s 10 who also helped toward the team total of 61.

Bountiful bounced back Oct. 21 with a sweep of Northridge 25-14, 25-15, 25-15. Ray led the way with 11 kills while Jordyn Harvey added nine. Chism ran the Redhawks offense with 33 assists to go with five kills, three aces and two blocks. Burleson recorded 15 digs on the defensive side with Jordyn Harvey digging up nine.

Bountiful is now 8-1 in Region 5 and 22-3 overall this season.

Davis

Davis defeated Weber in five sets Oct. 19, battling back from being two sets down to win 19-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-12. Aubrey Neilson had 20 kills to lead the Darts while Brinlee Bush added 17 of her own. Aimee Larson and Bella Roth combined for 39 assists in running the offense. Defensively, five players had double-digit digs, led by Hannah Cutright with 25, Bush 19, Neilson 15, Larsen 11 and Roth 11.

Against Fremont Oct. 25, Davis lost in three sets 26-24, 25-6, 25-5. Neilson’s 11 kills were tops for the Darts.

The split this week brings their Region 1 record to 5-6 with a season mark of 13-14.

Farmington

Farmington defeated Layton 25-16, 25-8, 25-23 Oct. 19. The Phoenix were led by Lydia Schwemmer and Elle Skabelund with seven kills each while Jocelyn McQuivey served up five aces. Alysa Whitney and Skabelund were a force at the net with nine total blocks between them while McQuivey had 13 digs defensively and Sophie Wendt (11) and Kenna Liwanag (10) also recorded double-digit digs.

Farmington is now 5-6 in Region 1 and 7-12 on the year.

Viewmont

Viewmont swept Bonneville 25-11, 25-10, 25-13 Oct. 21.

Grace Mackay put away 11 kills to lead the Vikings with Liza Montalbo and Kaylee Smith recording eight each as well. Macey Christian had 25 assists in distributing the ball on offense while also having three kills. At the net, Maddie Lege “had a great game,” according to head coach Cathy Hope, with nine blocks. Smith and Montalbo had 23 digs combined to lead defensively.

Viewmont’s Region 5 mark is now 4-5 with a 15-11 season record.

Regular season play wrapped up this week as teams fight for seeding for the 5A and 6A state tournaments that start Nov. 2.
