Woods Cross’ Hansen takes third at state XC

ROSE PARK—It’s been a great season for Woods Cross junior runner Sam Hansen. He captured titles in region and Davis District races, and at this year’s 5A state cross country championships at the Regional Athletic Complex in Rose Park, he won the bronze medal with an exciting third-place finish, edging out Mountain View’s Liam Heninger with two-tenths of a second. Hansen’s time was 15:36.8, about 30 seconds behind winner Jefferson McMullin of Lehi.

Hansen was the top local runner in the field, helping the Wildcats to an eighth-place finish with 250 points. Mountain View finished first at 88. 

Bountiful junior Andrew Jensen took 12th at 16:01.8. Viewmont’s Andrew Wadley placed 19th at 16:14.6.

Also finishing in the top 50 locally were Tim Clarke of Woods Cross (29th, 16:35.5), Bountiful’s Adam Mabey (30th, 16:35.6), Viewmont’s Gabe Hooper (34th, 16:40.0) and Bountiful’s Simon Barlow (50th, 16:54.3). Bountiful placed 9th in the team scoring, and Viewmont was 11th.

In 5A girls, the top local finisher was Viewmont junior Brynn Rees, coming in 22nd in a time of 19:36.8. Bountiful senior Sammi Stewart was 32nd at 19:44.4. Katie Hansen (Sam’s sister) of Woods Cross, a freshman, was 34th at 19:49.7.

Those in the top 50 locally included senior Emery Smith of Woods Cross (38th, 19:47.4), senior Isabella Hanks of Bountiful (39th, 19:58.7), junior Quincy Wadley of Viewmont (42nd, 20:08.2) and senior Ellie Robinson of Bountiful (48th, 20:13.7).

Springville won the team title with 44 points. Viewmont was 12th at 339, Bountiful 13th at 343, and Woods Cross 20th at 507.
