Vikings finish fourth at wrestling invitational

The Viewmont Vikings finished fourth at the annual Viewmont Wrestling Invitational last Friday and Saturday. Highland, Idaho won the team event with 170 points, followed by Corner Canyon at 144, South Summit at 143 and Viewmont. Davis was sixth in scoring at 130, and Woods Cross was ninth at 102.5. A total of 14 teams competed in the two-day event.

The Viking twin brother combination of Moses Espinoza-Owens and Marcus Espinoza-Owens continued their undefeated junior seasons and took first places in their respective weight categories, Moses at 157 and Marcus at 165. Moses earned a 19-6 major decision in the final over Kelton Smith of Payson. Marcus was also named as one of the Outstanding Wrestlers of the tournament after his technical fall victory over Murray’s Chandler Thompson.

Among the Viking wrestlers, Spencer Lee took third at 126, Theodore Larsen third at 138, Tyson Morley fourth at 150, James Astling sixth at 120 and Spencer Rees sixth at 132. 

For Davis, Jake Waddoups took first at 120, overwhelming Gavyn Gappmayer of Corner Canyon with a fall at 3:43. Geo Thomas was third at 190, Cameron Nelson was fourth at 165, Liam Major was fifth at 157, Kael Jensen fifth at 215, Tayden Roundy fifth at 285, and Xander Fenner was sixth at 10. 

For Woods Cross, Colton Erickson took first at 150 with a very quick fall (30 seconds) over Murray’s Isaac Orrock. Also winning a championship was Wildcat Cash Henderson at 215 with a 10-2 major decision over Eli Anderton of Highland. Jacob Foutz was second at 144, and Drew Derrick was third at 113.
