The Woods Cross boys basketball team had an up-and-down non-region portion of the schedule. But the Wildcats got off to the start they wanted in league play.

The Wildcats won both of their games last week – the first two Region 5 games of the season for the team. Woods Cross enters this week with a 9-5 overall record and just half a game back of Bonneville (3-0) in the region standings.

The pair of wins last week made it four in a row for the Wildcats.

Woods Cross took care of crosstown rival Bountiful at home on Jan. 19 by the count of 66-52. The Wildcats got off to a good start, leading 14-8 after one quarter. After being up 27-20 at halftime, Woods Cross went on a decisive 17-10 run in the third quarter to break the game up. As the fourth quarter began, the Wildcats were on top 44-30.

Woods Cross made 14 of its 15 free throws, while Bountiful made just three all night. Mason Bendinger was the game-high scorer with 24 points. He added six rebounds as well. Charlie Spencer chipped in 11 points, while Nic Hogan had 10 points. Jaxon Smith paced the team in assists with five.

Two nights later, again at home, Woods Cross posted a nearly identical winning score, this time over Northridge 65-52. But this contest was close throughout, as Woods Cross was clinging to a 46-43 lead heading into the final six minutes. A 19-9 fourth quarter made the difference in the win for Woods Cross. Bendinger had a monster night, tallying 26 points and 14 rebounds. Smith had eight points, seven assists and four rebounds.

This week, the Wildcats played at Viewmont on Wednesday and then host Bonneville on Friday.

Davis

No one has been able to stop the Darts this season. Davis’ undefeated season continues, as the team moved to 5-0 in league play and 16-0 overall with a dominant 68-26 blowout victory over Clearfield on Jan. 21.

This one was over in a hurry, as the Darts jumped to an eye-popping 28-2 lead after one quarter. After a 14-5 second quarter, Davis was on top by a football-like 42-7 score at the break. The Darts coasted the rest of the way for their 11th double-digit win of the season.

Colby Sims had 17 points to lead all scorers, while Sawyer Cottrell had 13 points and six rebounds. Rex Sunderland contributed 12 points. In all, nine Davis players got on the board.

Davis played at Fremont on Tuesday, after our press deadline. Next up is a visit from Layton on Friday.

Farmington

A 1-1 record last week for the Phoenix leaves them with a 3-2 mark in Region 1 and 8-7 overall. Farmington defeated Weber 82-68 on Jan. 21 three days after falling at Syracuse 68-54.

In the loss, Farmington was on the wrong end of a 22-10 second quarter, which went a long way toward helping Syracuse in getting the win. In defeat, Collin Chandler had 26 points, four rebounds and three steals. Paul Beattie had nine points and 10 rebounds.

Bouncing back against Weber, the Phoenix exploded for 48 points in the first half while building a 15-point lead. Farmington was ahead 66-41 going into the fourth quarter before Weber had a late flurry of points to make the final result closer. Chandler had a game-high 29 points, but Beattie lit up the stat sheet too with 27 points.

After hosting Clearfield on Tuesday, the Phoenix play at Fremont on Friday.
