BOUNTIFUL—The work of artist Hank Mattson has been selected and approved by city council for the north wall of the Bountiful Davis Art Center. The BDAC put out a Request for Proposal for the project last fall, and Mattson’s artwork for the four panel mural was chosen over two other finalists.

His design was recommended by both the art center and the city’s Public Art Advisory Board, who said it “was the strongest for its concepts, style and subject matter.” One member said it “has a sophisticated use of color and would elevate the location.”

BDAC executive director Alysa Revell praised Mattson, who the center has worked with in the past, “for his experience and quality of work.”

The mural design moves across faces of the state’s landscapes while simultaneously changing seasons – starting in spring in the desert, moving to summer in the forest, then to autumn in the Salt Lake Valley and winter on the mountain slopes.

“I chose this design because of BDAC’s annual plein art competition,” Mattson wrote in his proposal. “Through this program, BDAC brings together artists from all over the state, challenging them to get out in nature and paint. It’s a wonderful competition that I have participated in multiple times.”

He said he wanted to capture the many landscapes the state offers painters, as well as change of seasons.

Revell said Mattson plans to get started on the work about Feb. 21, weather permitting, with an official unveiling on May 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. That is “concurrent with the opening of the BDAC’s annual statewide competition,” she said.

“Discover Davis, the county’s hardworking tourism office, is sponsoring the mural,” Revell said. “Hank is a wonderful, professional artist, and BDAC is thrilled to have him partnering with us, Bountiful City and Discover Davis to create some beautiful public art on Main Street.”
