Bountiful’s 20-win season came to an end in the 5A state semifinals in a loss against defending 5A champion – and eventual 2022 winner – Springville 41-21 March 2. Viewmont and Davis reached the quarter final rounds in the 5A and 6A ranks, respectively.

Bountiful

Bountiful defeated Viewmont 66-31 in the 5A state quarterfinals at the Huntsman Center Feb. 28.

Taylor Harvey had a huge game, recording 20 points, eight rebounds and three steals, while Hayley Smith scored 12 points and Riley Johnson and Lizzie McConkie both added 10 each.

During the Redhawks’ three playoff games, they have beaten opponents by more than 25 points a game, while they have also included a third matchup with the Vikings and a fellow Region 5 opponent in Box Elder.

In the semifinals against Springville Mar. 2, Bountiful lost 41-21.

“It was a tough game,” said head coach Joel Burton. “We got good shots that just wouldn’t go in. We had been making those all year. I give Springville a lot of credit for making us uncomfortable. They are tough.”

McConkie’s nine points led the team.

Bountiful finished the year with a 20-4 record.

“I’m proud of these girls for all they have accomplished and for giving us a chance,” Burton said.

Viewmont

After being down 18 at the half, the Vikings scored 18 in the second half – but it wasn’t enough in the loss as Bountiful had 35.

Kristina Gunnell led Viewmont with 16 points, including the team’s four 3-pointers, while just three others scored in the game – Emma Mulitalo (6 points), Kaylee Smith (5) and Grace MacKay (4).

The Vikings ended the season 13-13.

“It was a rollercoaster season that I’m proud of,” said head coach Roger Farnsworth. “We finished in the Elite 8 at the Huntsman Center and created life-long bonds of friendship and love.”

Davis

In the 6A quarterfinals March 1, Davis lost to Westlake 45-32. The game was tight after the first quarter with the Thunder up one, but the Darts managed just nine points over the next two quarters to get down further in the eventual loss.

“We came out on fire and played tough,” said head coach Anne Jones. “Westlake is big and has some great shooters. A few bounces of the ball here or there and a couple of buckets down the stretch and it’s a different game, but we just came up a little short.”

Kylee Mabry scored 11 points to lead the Darts while Kendra Kitchen had six points and pulled down 10 boards.

The Darts finished their season with a 19-4 record and a second place finish in “a tough” Region 1.

“We had an incredible season and something to be very proud of,” Jones said. “Our players started putting in the time as soon as our last game was over last year. They put time in the weight room, worked on fundamentals and put time in the gym all spring, summer and fall. They came into every game determined and played their hearts out and got better as the season progressed. We had a number of players who hadn’t seen much varsity time before this year and they really stepped up, as did our returners.” λ
