Juniper Market connects small businesses with opportunities to sell in big locations

Before Whitney Coburn started her business Juniper Market she was mostly selling at a lot of local markets as a vendor with her own brand Juniper Studio. She noticed there were markets in Salt Lake and Utah County but not many in Davis County.

“I’m originally from Kaysville and wanted to start a market that was closer to my family and friends,” she said. “I have many friends that are also small business owners who were always driving south for markets too.”

Juniper Market is a small business market that connects local business owners and artisans to premier shopping centers, said Coburn. “We curate a line up of amazing local businesses and make it easy for the local community to shop small. By partnering with centers like Station Park we give our customers the chance to shop big brands and local businesses in one beautiful location.”

The markets have a lot of variety, she said. “A typical market has women’s and kids clothing, accessories, home decor, art, jewelry, and baked goods. Our markets are different each month.”

Coburn said before starting Juniper Market, she had been selling at a lot of local markets as a vendor with her own brand Juniper Studio. “I loved being able to build my brand at markets and interact with customers. Participating in in person events was so fun for me because I was able to make friends and grow my business.”

Juniper Studio is a women’s clothing and accessories business with a signature product: skinny scarves, she said. “Skinny scarves can be worn in a variety of ways: as a headband, tied around a ponytail, on a bag and many others. I make them locally here in Utah.”

Having her own business, Coburn became really passionate about the impact buyers can have when they shop small. “I saw how meaningful each purchase was to me and to my peers,” she said. “I was inspired to start my own market in Davis County where I could help small businesses grow and succeed. Our first market was at Station Park in May 2021. Since then we’ve hosted lots of markets there, and a few at other retail locations.”

Coburn was a teacher prior to starting either business. “Once my daughter was born I stopped teaching and continued to work on my own brand/hosting markets,” she said. “When I tell people I used to be a teacher they are usually surprised that I’m now doing something totally different. What they don’t realize is that teaching a class of 36 fifth graders is actually great preparation for hosting big events like Juniper Market. I learned so much about planning and organizing as a teacher and I’d like to think that those skills really shine at Juniper Market too.”
