Woods Cross, Viewmont win Region 5 baseball openers

At long last, this week saw local baseball teams get into region play. While Davis and Farmington have already been playing Region 1 games, Region 5 finally got underway.

Woods Cross

The Wildcats’ lone league game so far was a mismatch: a 20-0 rout of Bonneville on Tuesday. The lopsided victory brough Woods Cross’ record to 3-5 overall.

In the win, Harley Vicchrilli had 11 strikeouts and was the winning pitcher, allowing a single hit in the 4 ½-inning game. The Wildcats registered 13 hits on the day, including a double from Beckham Stanger. Stetson Critchley led the way with three RBIs, as 11 other players batted in runs too.

Woods Cross was set to play at Bonneville on Wednesday and conclude the three-game series against the Laker on Friday at home.

Viewmont

The Vikings have had their share of close games, and their region opener was no exception.

Viewmont got off to a 1-0 start in Region 5 with a 5-4 win over Box Elder on Tuesday. It was the third one-run win in a row for the Vikings, who moved to 5-1 overall.

In the victory, Cal Miller was the pitching star this time around. He struck out eight batters and got the win. Meanwhile, Braxton Brenenstall had a double and an RBI, while Jaxon Marble had a pair of RBIs.

On April 8, Viewmont had one final warm-up for Region 5 action with a 13-12 slugfest win over Mountain Ridge. Six of Viewmont’s runs came in the seventh and eighth innings. Marble was the winning pitcher and had a double and three RBIs from the plate. Max Lee had a double and two RBIs. Brenenstall had three RBIs.

The Vikings played at Box Elder on Wednesday and finish the three-game slate against the Bees on Friday.

Bountiful

The 4-4 Redhawks fell to Northridge 5-4 on Tuesday in their first Region 5 game of the season. The two teams will get together two more times this week: Wednesday and Friday.

In the narrow loss, Bountiful scored three of its runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. After another fun in the fourth inning, it was 4-1 in favor of Bountiful. That lead held until the sixth inning when Northridge tallied four runs to go up for good.

Farmington

The Phoenix are 3-2 in Region 1, two games behind 5-0 Fremont. In all games, Farmington is 4-5.

The Phoenix have played two games this week so far, both losses. First, the team fell to Layton 12-4 on Monday, followed by a 16-9 defeat at Syracuse on Tuesday. Dayton Runyan and Josh Hecht had doubles in the loss to Layton, which had 16 hits. Farmington was in a 10-0 hold in the third inning before getting to 10-4 entering the sixth inning.

Against Syracuse, Farmington had 11 hits, including doubles from Runyan and Cole Willis. Pickle Monk added a pair of RBIs, but it wasn’t enough to slow down a red-hot Syracuse team that clobbered 14 hits.

Farmington finishes its series with Syracuse this week with fames at home on Wednesday and on the road on Friday.

Davis

It has been a rough season for Davis, which has managed just one win in eight tries this season. In Region 1, the Darts have gotten in just a pair of games, splitting them.

Davis lost to Fremont on Monday by the count of 5-4 in an eight-inning contest. Branson Paulette had a double and an RBI in a losing effort. However, the next day, Davis put it all together and picked up its first win of the year—in a huge way. The Darts pummeled Weber 19-9 on the strength of an 11-run sixth inning. The team recorded 13 hits. Kaleb Weaver, Max Hunter, Tyson Elkins, Owen Talbot and Paulette each had doubles. Talbot and Carter Knight posted three RBIs. Croyden Christianson was the winning pitcher.

Davis played at Weber on Wednesday and host the Warriors again on Friday.
