The end of September and first week of October were busy days for local girls tennis team, as region and state tournament action heated up. Bountiful qualified all three singles players and both doubles teams for the Class 5A tournament, which began with preliminary rounds Sept. 30 and concluded Oct. 5 and 7 at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.

Viewmont recorded nine points at state, placing the Vikings in a tie for the 10th spot out of 28 schools.

This year's finish at the 5A state tournament is the latest evidence that Viewmont is improving. The Vikings struggled in 2021, not scoring at state. Then, at last year’s tournament, Viewmont placed 13th overall. The Vikings were even more competitive this time around.

Viewmont’s best success came in first and second singles where its players got to the quarterfinals. First singles competitor Emily Bowen, a junior, earned a bye in the opening round before taking care of her round of 16 opponent. There, she defeated Salem Hills’ Anna Barton 6-3, 6-1 to advance. Lily Stohl, of Olympus, proved to be too much in the quarterfinals, defeating Bowen 6-0, 6-3.

Sophomore second singles player Sophia Robison had some success at state too. She won her first match in the round of 32 by taking down Keira Kemp of Kearns 6-1, 6-0. From there, she advanced past the round of 16 with a difficult 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) win over Ella Bradford of Highland. But Skyline’s Rachel Heimburger stopped Robison from going further, as Robison lost in the quarterfinals 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).

In addition, Viewmont sent third singles Sarah Dixon, a senior, to the state tournament. She had a good opening match in the round of 32, winning over Bonneville’s Sydney Holden 6-0, 7-5. She couldn’t overcome a challenge from Maple Mountain’s Mariah Crandall in the round of 16, however, falling 6-2, 6-2.

Both doubles teams also qualified for state. Cara Vogrinec, a junior, and Eliza Webster, a senior, defeated a pair from West 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 32 of first doubles. They advanced to the round of 16 but succumbed to Timpview’s team 6-1, 6-0. Second doubles teammates Ella Naea, a senior, and junior Mia Sneddon got a 6-2, 7-5 victory for Viewmont in the round of 32. That’s as far as they could make it, as the tandem got swept by the talented Sydney Kemp and Lila Johnson of Woods Cross of 6-0, 6-0.

The Vikings will have four of its seven varsity starters back next season, as well as some junior varsity players that will be counted on for a larger role in 2024.
