VHS girls basketball starts year against tough 6A teams
Nov 17, 2023 10:24AM ● By Catherine GarrettSecond-year head coach Cameron Gardner welcomes back several returning players to his team this year that tied for second place in Region 5 last season and lost to Spanish Fork in the first round of the 5A state tournament.
Seniors Karissa Goff and Kristina Gunnell, along with juniors Mary Carr, Sophie Gold, Kelsey Lindsey, Mara Mickelson, Aubrey Mulitalo and Callie Peterson, will be looked to for leadership on and off the court for the Vikings this season.
Viewmont, who is among the top teams in the 5A ranks to start the year, will face some tough 6A competition right out of the gate. “We expect to compete at the highest level and with the highest competition, we will be tested early with our first four games against highly ranked teams [in Davis, West, Farmington and Weber],” said Gardner.
Also on the DHS team this season are senior Natalia Titensor; juniors Savoy Ashworth and Diandra Partey; sophomores Peyton Burningham, Sage Cutler, Raegyn Dahlke, Millie Egnew, Lyv Jones, Susan Lamb, Emma Petersen and Kirra Singley; and freshmen Sophie Hanson, Nadia Paschen, Kailey Selleneit and Lydia Stringfellow.
“We have 12 new players in our program and we are excited for their growth,” said Gardner, who is being assisted on the coaching staff this year by Lindsay Familiar, Natalie Blaylock and Dylan Cahoon.
Viewmont begins the season against Davis, West, Farmington, Weber, Skyline and Riverton while also playing in the St. George Tourney Dec. 7-9. Region 5 home-and-away play begins Jan. 3 with Roy and then against Bountiful, Box Elder, Woods Cross, Northridge, Bonneville and Clearfield. The 5A state tournament is scheduled for Feb. 20 through March 2.
