The Viewmont boys basketball team got an early start to the season and then took two weeks off. The layover didn’t seem to hurt the Vikings at all.

In fact, Viewmont won its first game of the season, improving to 1-2 when it returned to the court on Dec. 1 against Summit Academy. Playing at home, the Vikings used big second and third quarters to secure a big 79-68 victory.

Viewmont was all knotted up with Summit Academy 16-16 after one quarter. Determined to not let its losing streak reach three games, Viewmont outscored the visitors 23-17 in the second quarter to take a 39-33 lead into the locker room. The advantage swelled to 64-53 heading into the fourth quarter after a 25-20 run in the third. The two teams played an even 15-15 in the final six minutes, as the Vikings won by 11. It was first-year head coach Travis Frey’s first win at Viewmont and the Vikings’ first win since defeating Box Elder on Feb. 17, the final regular season game of the previous season.

The Vikings won despite struggling from the field, as they hit just 39 of 88 shots. However, they limited Summit Academy to just 42.3% from the floor and made eight three-pointers to six for the Bears. Nine players scored for Viewmont, including two who reached double figures. Max Draper was the leading scorer in the game. The senior guard hit a season-high 23 points and knocked down a three-pointer. Junior Cache Tuia his four three-pointers and tallied 18 points on the night, a season-high for him too. Max Larsen and Drez Jensen each had nine points, while Daren Tovey had seven. Kade Cannon had six points in the victory, with his points coming on a pair of three-pointers.

Three important games await the Vikings this week.

Viewmont plays a trio of road games, beginning with a contest against Fremont on Thursday. The Vikings also played at Region 1 opponents Davis (Friday) and Weber (Saturday) this week. The next home game is Dec. 12 against another Class 6A foe, Mountain Ridge.
