Prep boys basketball: big week of wins brings Bountiful’s record to 4-0

Dec 07, 2023 12:01PM ● By Josh McFadden

In what was a busy week of basketball, the Bountiful boys team made the most of its opportunities, winning three times to remain unblemished on the season.

With a trio of victories, the Redhawks enter this week with a 4-0 record. Last week’s wins were each by at least seven points, with two of them coming by no fewer than 18 points.

Bountiful first dispatched East 79-58 on Nov. 28. The fellow Class 5A foe jumped out to a 26-18 lead over the Redhawks, but that was short-lived. Bountiful turned the tables in a big way, going on runs of 15-8 and 23-11 in the next two quarters. Entering the fourth quarter, Bountiful held a 56-45 advantage in what was once a game it trailed by eight.

The Redhawks didn’t let up in the fourth quarter.

Bountiful outscored East 23-13 over the final six minutes to win handily. The Redhawks made 12 more shots from the floor and three more free throws than East in the victory. Carson Smith and Charlie Smith led Bountiful with 19 points and 13 points, respectively. Arturo Garcia added 12 points for the Redhawks.

The outcomes in the next game, the following night at home against Cedar Valley, was similar, though the script was different. Bountiful prevailed 74-56 but didn’t fall behind early. This time around, Bountiful got up 25-18 in the first quarter and 45-27 at halftime. In the second half, the Redhawks maintained the margin, though Cedar Valley made it a little interesting in the third quarter by trimming the lead to 57-45. The fourth quarter belonged to Bountiful, as it outscored the Aviators 17-11 in what was the visitor’s first game of the season.

Garcia had 18 points, all on three-pointers, as he made six from long range. Bryson Heath had 17 points, while Carson Smith and Charlie Smith had 15 points and 14 points, respectively.

The busy week culminated in another win, this time a 67-60 triumph over Skyridge on the road on Dec. 1.

The back-and-forth affair saw Bountiful fall behind 16-10 in the first quarter but rebound for a 30-25 halftime lead thanks to a 20-9 second quarter. The Redhawks didn’t let the Falcons make any big runs in the second half, as they maintained a lead throughout. Heath led the team with 21 points, and Charlie Smith added 18 points, including four three-pointers. Faletau Satuala, a star from the Redhawks’ state runner-up football team, had 16 points in the victory.

Bountiful hosted Skyline on Tuesday, after our press deadline. The Redhawks play at Timpview on Dec. 12.
