Close loss keeps Woods Cross boys basketball seeking first victory of season

Dec 07, 2023 12:03PM ● By Josh McFadden

The Woods Cross boys basketball team is still looking for that elusive first win of the season.

Once again, the Wildcats came up just short, losing in a close battle for the second time in as many games. Ten days after losing by four points, the Wildcats fell at Logan 55-53 on Dec. 1.

The Wildcats rallied after falling behind early and nearly pulled out the victory.

Woods Cross played catch-up the entire game after falling behind 21-11 in the first quarter. The Wildcats then outscored the Grizzlies in each of the next three quarters, but their comeback wasn’t quite enough. Going into the fourth quarter, it was 45-42 Logan. Woods Cross had a narrow 11-10 advantage in the final quarter. The Wildcats hit six more shots from the floor than Logan – 21-15 – but made just three free throws to Logan’s 14.

Bryson Watson was the leading scorer for Woods Cross, tallying 21 points on the evening. He led all players in the game with four three-pointers. Hunter Jackson had a nice all-around effort. The junior had 11 points, eight assists and three steals. Leading the team in rebounding was Ben Smith-Mecham with seven. Hayden Poulton had nine points and three rebounds to go along with two assists, a steal and a block in a state-filling performance.

Finding win No. 1 won’t get any easier for Woods Cross. The Wildcats have three games this week, each against teams from Class 6A’s Region 1. The stretch begins Thursday with a contest at Syracuse, followed by a home matchup with Weber on Friday. In a rare Saturday game, the Wildcats play at Fremont. Woods Cross then hosts a strong American Fork team on Dec. 12.

The last time Woods Cross tasted victory was in the regular-season finale of the 2022–23 season, a Feb. 17 win over Bonnevile.
