Bountiful

Bountiful, the top-ranked team in 5A, defeated SkyView 54-39 Dec. 5. The Redhawks came out firing, going up 10 after the first quarter and maintained an eight-point lead by the break. They continued to pour it on offensively in the second half with 31 points to pull away in the win.

Taylor Harvey had a big night with 25 points with Milika Satuala also putting in 17. Mae Johnson (six points), Adelaide Stevenson (five) and Maleah Nelson (one) had the rest of Bountiful’s scoring.

Against Brighton Dec. 8, the Redhawks got out to a 10-point lead early and were up by 13 by halftime. The Bengals fought their way back into the game with a 16-point third-quarter effort but the Redhawks hung on for a 57-54 win.

Harvey scored 21 points with Satuala adding 20, Stevenson 8, Nelson 5 and Orme 3.

Bountiful is now 4-2 early in the season.

Davis

Davis defeated Woods Cross 48-29 Dec. 5, coming out strong with a 15-4 edge after the first quarter and up 16 points at the half.

Kate Richards scored 15 points to lead the Darts while Kendra Kitchen added 13 points. Others providing offense in the big win were Kate Willard (five points), Chloe Peery (four), Avery Dain (four), Shea Miller (three), T’maea Eteuati (two) and Maya Chino (two).

Against Timpview Dec. 7, Davis won 56-37. The team started out hot with 22 first-quarter points, going up by nine and doubling that by the break. Twenty-two more points in the second half helped the Darts coast to the win.

Kitchen’s 24 points were tops for Davis while Eteuati and Richards were both in double figures with 16 and 12 points, respectively. Miller (two points) and Dain (two points) rounded out the scoring.

The third-ranked Darts – in 6A – improved to 5-0 in the preseason.

Woods Cross

Woods Cross, currently ranked fifth in the 5A ranks, was led by Mari Nichols with nine points in the team’s 19-point loss to Davis Dec. 5. Kiyomi Tauataina, Avery Poulton and Grace MacArthur each added six.

“We played a really good Davis team and our team did not respond very well,” said head coach David Simon. “I really feel like our team is better than how we played. It’s still early in the season so we will keep working hard to improve.”

The Wildcats fell to 2-1 so far this season.

Viewmont

Viewmont beat Farmington 61-38 Dec. 5, turning a 27-20 halftime advantage into a big win with a 34-point second-half effort.

“We were able to win each quarter and limit our turnovers,” said head coach Cameron Gardner. “We played complimentary basketball and got some fast break offense because of our press.

Aubrey Mulitalo led the Vikings with 15 points while Sophie Gold and Karissa Goff both had 11 points. Also scoring in the win were Kristina Gunnell (seven points), Kailey Selleneit (five), Callie Peterson (four) and Mary Carr (four).

“We still have a long way to go to be playing our best basketball and we will keep working towards that,” Gardner said.

In the Southern Classic Tournament in St. George Dec. 6-8, Viewmont picked up wins over Hillcrest and Crimson Cliffs while losing to Kanab.

Against the Huskies, the Vikings held Hillcrest to just three points in each of the first three quarters – going up 56-9 heading into the final eight minutes of play and then winning 58-11.

Gold’s 16 points and five steals along with Carr’s 12 points and six rebounds led the team. Also scoring in the win were Mulitalo (eight points), Peterson (five), Gunnell (five), Cayla Stout (four), Selleneit (two), Peyton Burningham (two), Natalie Titensor (two) and Mara Mickelson (two).

“We took care of business, turning them over a lot and only allowed them to make three baskets for the game,” Gardner said. “We were able to get all of our varsity players in and score which is always fun.”

Against Crimson Cliffs, Viewmont won 49-43, maintaining control much of the game – going up nine at halftime and holding off the Mustangs at the end.

Carr’s double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds led the way with Mulitalo (nine points), Gunnell (nine), Gold (seven), Goff (three), Stout (two) and Mickelson (two) also scoring in the win.

“We grinded out another win on a poor shooting night for us, shooting 8% from the three-point line,” Gardner said. “We got up by as many as 17 in the fourth quarter and then they cut the deficit by the end of the game.”

Against Kanab, the Vikings struggled out of the gate and faced a 32-11 halftime deficit before putting up 27 second-half points. But, the margin was ultimately too tough to overcome.

Gunnell and Gold combined for 19 points in the 55-38 loss.

“We got off to a really slow start and got down,” Gardner said. “We fought back and cut it to eight early in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t quite finish the comeback.”

“It was a fun tournament and we were able to spend a lot of time together as a team and hopefully it will be something we grow from and continue to get better.”

Viewmont is now 3-3 this season.

Farmington

Farmington lost to Viewmont 61-38 Dec. 5. The team’s slow starts in the first and third quarters led to an 11-point deficit by the final quarter where the Phoenix squad were outscored by 12 in the loss.

Kate Garff and Morgan Rogers combined for 17 points for Farmington.

Against Cyprus Dec. 8, lost 58-43. The Pirates turned a two-point game into an eight-point edge by the break and then scored 30 second-half points to widen the margin.

Brynn Ryan’s 19 points led the way for Farmington in the loss.

The Phoenix team is still looking for its first win after four games this year.
