Local boys basketball teams hit the hardwood as season tips off

Nov 27, 2024 11:05AM ● By Josh McFadden

The fall sports season was barely in the books for most teams, and winter sports had already started. Such is the busy calendar in high school athletics.

For Davis County teams, the boys basketball season could be in intriguing one.

Farmington

The Phoenix are coming off a 14-10 season, tying for fourth in Region 1 with a 4-6 record. Farmington played a pair of region foes in the Class 6A tournament, defeating Weber in the second round and falling at Layton in the quarterfinals.

I’ll be a new-look Farmington team in 2024–25.

Head coach Kasey Walkenhurst has to replace his top six scorers from a year ago, leaving him with a host of newcomers to complement some players who were reserves last season. These players will need to step up for Farmington to be competitive in a challenging Region 1.

The new season started off with a 53-40 loss at home to Skyline on Nov. 22.

Farmington struggled offensively, hitting just 13 field goals all game. The team fell into an early hole and couldn’t climb out. Junior Cameron Brower led the way with 16 points, while sophomore Malakai Tobler added 12 points. Farmington played at Viewmont on Tuesday and hosts West Field on Dec. 3.

Davis

This season, the Darts are hoping to return to championship-level play.

Davis won the Class 6A state title in 2021, followed by a 22-2 season in 2022. The past two seasons, Davis has been building its program with a 14-12 record in 2022–23 and a 17-8 mark last season.

The Darts will have their top scorer from last season back at their disposal. Senior Coleman Atwater averaged 14.9 points per game in 2023–24. He scored in double figures in all but three games and post five games of 20 or more points. Atwater hit a team-best 56 three-pointers and contributed 3.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists an outing last season.

Also back for Davis is junior forward Tradon Bessinger, fresh off a record-setting season on the football field. On the basketball team last season, Bessinger averaged 6.8 points and four rebounds a contest. Sophomore Bode Sparrow, another football standout, should also have a bigger role on the squad this season. Other players to watch include junior guard JT Turley and senior guards Bennett Wright and Bryker Couser.

Davis started the year Nov. 26, after our press time with a game at Copper Hills. The home opener for the Darts will be Dec. 3 against Pleasant Grove.

Bountiful

In the 5A ranks, Bountiful is a favorite to repeat as Region 5 champions. The Darts capture the league title last season by going 12-2. Overall, Bountiful was 19-6 last season and lost in the 5A quarterfinals.

Head coach Gus Sopena begins his second season at the helm of the Bountiful program. The Redhawks started off with a victory in a game filled with offensive fireworks. Bountiful won 92-86 at Weber, making it the second year in a row that the Redhawks broke the 90-point barrier in the season opener, having scored 98 points the year before.

Bountiful trailed 31-19 after one quarter but clamped down defensively, especially in quarters two and four. The Redhawks got things going on offense when it mattered most, putting up 29 points in the fourth quarter while outscoring Weber by 13 points. The key stretch erased a six-point deficit after three quarters and clinched the win for the Redhawks.

Five players scored in double figures for Bountiful, with Bryson Heath totaling 27 points. Heath, a senior guard, also had six rebounds, three assists and five steals. Charlie Smith added 17 points, while Lincoln Smith contributed 15 points and four assists. Davey Howe had 14 points and four rebounds. Cole Hewlett chipped in 13 points.

Bountiful played at Fremont on Nov. 26, after our press deadline. Up next is a game at Crimson Cliffs on Dec. 5.

Viewmont

The Vikings are looking to improve off a 10-15 mark last season and move up the Region 5 standings, where they placed in a tie for fifth a season ago.

Viewmont had a rough season opener by falling to Layton at home by the count of 86-52. The Vikings were down big early on, trailing 45-23 at halftime. Drez Jensen’s 13 points led the Vikings, while Cache Tuia added 11 points. Jacob Jeppsen had nine points and five rebounds. Carson Tovey scored eight points and had a team-best seven rebounds.

After Viewmont’s home game with Farmington on Nov. 26, it travels to Mountain Ridge on Dec. 3 for its first road contest of the season.

Woods Cross

The Wildcats were 7-17 overall last season and tied for fifth place in Region 5 with a 6-8 mark. They suffered a close loss to Skyline 57-56, in the first round of the 5A state tournament last season.

Woods Cross returns two starters this season, guard Hunter Jackson, a senior, and guard Bryson Watson, a junior. Jackson was the team’s leading scorer last season with an average of 15.1 points per game. Watson, meanwhile, was second on the team with 11.7 points an outing. Jackson also had the best rebounding average for Woods Cross in 2023–24 at 6.4 a game.

The new season started off with a victory for Woods Cross. The Wildcats prevailed over Region 4’s Kearns by the count of 54-42. Woods Cross got off to a 17-9 lead after one quarter and never looked back. Jackson had a team-high 16 points in the victory. Watson added nine points. Junior Elliot Bendinger had 11 points. After hosting Murray at home on Nov. 26, Woods Cross plays at East on Dec. 3.
