Viewmont
The Viewmont High boys swimming team placed second – to Box Elder – at the Region 5 championships at the South Davis Recreation Center Feb. 1. The Vikings boys earned nine first-place finishes at the meet.
“For the boys, we had a near perfect meet,” said head coach Jessica Trauner. “They swept the relays, and we had a swimmer on the podium in every event except the 500 free, but we were still able to get multiple kids in scoring position in that event alone.”
Senior Isaac Hale won the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke and swam legs on the winning 400 free relay and 200 free relay teams, closing out a perfect regular season where he placed first in every event he swam this season.
Sophomore Thomas Chamberlain broke the school’s 200 IM record in winning that event, while also claiming the 100 free race and additionally swam legs on the 200 medley and 400 free relay championship teams.
Other winners for Viewmont were Henry Helgesen (first, 100 breast; first, 200 medley relay; first, 400 free relay; first, 200 free relay), Landon Hopfenbeck (first, 400 free relay; first, 200 free relay), Gus Stockhoff (first, 200 medley relay), Andrew Webster (first, 50 free; first, 200 medley relay; first, 200 free relay). Webster also placed third in the 200 free and Stockhoff was sixth in the 100 fly.
“Because of those swimmers we were able to secure most of Viewmont’s points and they played big roles in our relays,” Trauner said. “Along with John Paul Decker, they will all be making a run at state next week with hopes to cause disruption and finish in the top five as a team.”
On the girls side, senior Izzy Harris placed first in the 50 free for the third-place girls team. Other top-six showings which earned medals were senior Veronika Paschen (second, 50 free), Harris (third, 100 free), the 200 free relay lineup of Harris, junior Julia Jones, senior Vivienne Loose and Paschen (third), the 400 free relay team of Paschen, Kylee Smith, Loose and Harris (third) and Loose (fifth, 100 breast).
“For girls, we had six podiums and a lot of girls coming into the top 15 spots which got us second place,” said Trauner. “This was surprising because we are rebuilding the girls team a bit this year, but we had about 12 time drops from our girls side. They have worked so hard this season and we had a lot of improvement from swimmers like Kylee Smith and Vivi Loose who helped round out our A relays with Izzy Harris and Veronika Paschen.”
Woods Cross
The Woods Cross High swimming team placed second overall at the Region 5 championships with the girls taking second and boys fourth.
Ava Glissmeyer broke the school record in the 500 free, winning the event in 5:21.84, with Ammon Kamauu also setting the school record in the boys 500 free, with a 4:53.76 swim, also taking first at region. They also won the 100 back and 200 free, respectively at the meet.
Other region champions for Woods Cross were Grace Gilbert (100 fly) and the 400 free relay lineup of Brie Nydegger, Gilbert, Rebekah Cyril and Glissmeyer.
Also earning medals for top-six finishes for the girls and boys teams were Jane Boynton (second, 200 free relay; second, 200 medley relay; sixth, 50 free), Cyril (second, 200 medley relay; fourth, 50 free, fourth, 100 free), Gilbert (second, 200 IM; second, 200 free relay), Glissmeyer (second, 200 medley relay), Kalli Holzer (second, 200 free relay; second, 200 medley relay; fourth 100 breast; fifth, 100 fly), Nydegger (second, 200 free relay; third, 200 IM; fourth, 100 fly), Maxwell Holdstock (third, 200 medley relay; fifth, 100 free; fifth, 100 breast), Sebastian James (third, 200 medley relay; fifth, 100 fly), Kamauu (third, 200 medley relay) and Chase Miller (third, 200 medley relay).
“It was such an exciting and great end-of-season meet with lots of fantastic swims by all the kids,” said assistant coach Jamie Holzer.
Bountiful
The Bountiful High boys team placed fifth at the Region 5 championships while the girls took seventh.
“Region went well for us,” said head coach Chad Reimschussel.
Henry Long was second in the 200 free and 500 free with Liam Glissmeyer taking second in the 100 breast and third in the 200 IM to lead the program.
