The Farmington High swimming team placed fifth overall at the 6A state championships Feb. 15 at Brigham Young University, with sophomore Elsie Crowell earning two second-place finishes and several other top-eight showings.

Crowell touched behind Syracuse’s LayLeigh Turner in the 200 Individual Medley, breaking the school record with a 2:13.32 swim. In the 100 backstroke, Crowell came in after American Fork’s Addie Harding – besting her own school record with a time of 59.48.

Farmington High senior Clarke Tholl and sophomore Jack Smart placed eighth and sixth, respectively, in the 100 freestyle at the 6A state championships Feb. 15 at Brigham Young University. Smart broke his own school record in the event in a time of 49.12 seconds. Photo courtesy Stacy Edholm

“It was tough competition and the Phoenix rose to the occasion!” said head coach Stacy Edholm.

Other school records that were broken at the meet were the 200 medley relay of Crowell, sophomore Jacie Nielson, senior London Spears and junior Maddy Kartchner – who took fourth in 1:57.24 – as well as Nielson’s fifth-place swim in 1:11.21 in the 100 breaststroke; Crowell’s 50 free split of 25.36 for the sixth-place 200 free relay squad (which also consisted of Kartchner, sophomore Heidi Holbrook and Spears); sophomore Jack Smart’s sixth-place 100 free race in a time of 49.12 and his seventh-place showing in the 50 free in 22.53; the seventh-place 200 free relay squad of senior Clarke Tholl, sophomore Will Norseth, senior Jake Rizley and Smart in 1:31.9; and junior Will Scott in the preliminaries of the 100 back with a 56.76 swim, good for 12th in the event.

Others placing among the 24 swimmers Farmington took to state – the most in school history – were Tholl (seventh, 100 breast; eighth, 100 free); the seventh-place 200 medley relay lineup of Scott, junior Jonah Babboni, sophomore Owen VanSkiver and sophomore Noah Bampi; the seventh-place 400 free relay team of Rizley, Tholl, Scott and Smart; and Nielson (eighth, 500 free).

“Farmington was also honored to send a Unified swimmer to State again!” Edholm said, referring to junior Hailey Monson who won the 50 and 100 freestyle races in the Division 2 event, getting a personal-best 1:32.44 in the 100 free.

“State is always a high energy and fun meet, where our team gets to spend two days together, getting some serious team-bonding in,” Edholm said. “Friendships that have formed over the season were solidified. It was so emotional, as it is every year, at the end of the meet, as we had our seniors swim their last events as high schoolers.”
