The Davis boys basketball team was at its best when it mattered most.

The Darts used an impressive fourth quarter to defeat Herriman 75-66 in the championship game of the Class 6A state tournament, Feb. 27 at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City. Davis finished the season with a 24-3 record and won its second state title in the past five seasons and the ninth in its long school history.

This championship was especially sweet.

Davis had a daunting challenge against Herriman, the top-seeded team in 6A that had lost just twice entering the contest. Herriman led 19-17 after one quarter and 34-30 at halftime. Heading into the fourth quarter, it was 46-43. That’s when the Davis offense took off, scoring 32 points in the final six minutes and outscoring the Mustangs by 12.

For the game, Davis shot 48% from the floor and was a deadly accurate 18 of 19 from the foul line. The Darts also hit nine three-pointers to seven for Herriman. Coleman Atwater punctuated his outstanding season with a game-high 24 points. Bode Sparrow added 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while JT Turley had 12 points, six rebounds and seven assists.

Head coach Chad Sims now has two state championships as the Darts’ coach and had amassed a record of 209-65.

The Darts’ semifinals victory turned heads too.

To reach the championship round, Davis crushed region rival Layton 75-55 in the semifinals on Feb. 26. It was the second win of the season for Davis over Layton and avenged the Darts’ only region loss of the season to the team with which Davis shared the Region 1 crown. In the semifinals, Davis erased a 21-9 deficit at the end of first quarter by outscoring Layton 19-4 in the second quarter. The Darts cruised the rest of the way and got 18 points from Atwater, 17 points from Sparrow and 16 points from Turley.

The 2024–25 season was a memorable one for Davis.

Aside from winning the 6A title and sharing the Region 1 championship, Davis was one of the most dominant teams in the state. Early in the season, the Darts also defeated Olympus, the team that would go on to capture the 5A state title.

Atwater was the fifth-leading scorer in the state and second in 6A with an average of 21.8 points per game. He was also third for Davis with 4.8 rebounds an outing. Atwater scored in double figures in every game this season, with a season-high 45 points on Dec. 21 against out-of-state foe West Valley, Washington. He scored at least 20 points 15 times. Turley chipped in 12.6 points a game, while Sparrow was at 10.2 points a contest.

Don’t expect the Darts to fall down the standings too far, if at all, in 2025–26. Atwater is a senior, so his career at Davis is over. However, contributors Tradon Bessinger and Turley are juniors, and Sparrow is just a sophomore. Another solid role player, Junior Moala is also a junior.
