“Be One” is the theme this season for the Farmington High softball team, hoping to “hit stride” with eight key returning players on the field. Head coach Haleigh Mortensen, in her fourth year, is expecting heavy contributions this spring from junior utility player Ruby Andrus, junior outfielder Morgan Rogers, junior utility player/catcher Kiley Gazafy, senior infielder Brooklyn Wright, senior utility player Lola Ogzewalla, sophomore outfielder Jacie Nielson, junior utility player Megan Hoskins and sophomore catcher/third baseman Sophia Strong.
Six incoming freshman – pitcher/utility player Lill Tophman, pitcher/first baseman Megahn Fields, outfielder Jane Frey, catcher Peyton O’Keefe, infielder/pitcher Taylor Adams and infielder Hadley Crowley – are also being looked to for an improvement on a fourth-place Region 1 finish a year ago.
“Overall, we’re very excited for this season!” Mortensen said. “We’re excited to grow together as a team and make the most of this year! We’ve been focusing on consistent competitive pitching, aggressive creative defense and committed tough hitting.”
In its first game of the season, the Phoenix squad lost to Taylorsville 6-1 March 5.
Farmington is also scheduled to play Mountain Ridge, Green Canyon, Lehi, Morgan, Corner Canyon, Brighton, Pleasant Grove, Timpview, Roy and West Jordan along with Region 1 home-and-away games against Fremont, Weber, Bonneville, Syracuse, Layton and Davis.
Also on the FHS team this spring are seniors Miranda Hampton and Lola Ogzewalla; juniors Ruby Andrus, Kiley Gazafy, Megan Hoskins, Morgan Rogers, Brooklyn Wright and Lilliana Zavala; sophomores Jacie Nielson, Eliza Nowling, Sophia Strong and Kambree Teuscher; and
freshmen Taylor Adams, Hadley Crowley, Meghan Fields, Jane Frey, Payton Okeefe and Lill Topham.
