Bountiful, Viewmont begin Region 5 play with two wins; Farmington is now 2-0 in pre-season action

Bountiful
Bountiful beat Woods Cross 25-17, 25-16, 22-25, 25-20 Mar. 11.
Landon Chism put away 17 kills – hitting .389 – to lead the Redhawks with Aidan Sanford adding 14 to go with three aces. Kainoa Evans ran the team’s offense with 35 assists.
“It was exciting to start Region 5 play,” said head coach Sarah Chism. “The overall level of play from the inaugural year for boys volleyball to this second year is impressive and it is going to make for some exciting matches all season long.”
Against Bonneville Mar. 13, Bountiful won 25-20, 22-25, 25-12, 25-9.
Sanford’s 17 kills led the Redhawks offensively with Landon Chism and Connor Burleson each adding 12.
Bountiful is now 2-0 in Region 5 play and 3-2 overall.
Viewmont
Viewmont swept Clearfield 25-16, 25-18, 25-22 Mar. 11.
Dallin Lether ran the Vikings offense with 34 assists while adding two blocks and one kill.
“Our team executed our plan well,” said head coach Karl Lippa. “Dominic Dirkmaat had a great match blocking and hitting with three kills and two blocks. Britan Bredthauer had his first career kills (two) in his first season of volleyball.”
Against Northridge Mar. 13, Viewmont again pulled out a sweep, this time 25-12, 25-16, 27-25.
Harrison Nagel put away seven kills, served up two aces and had two digs to lead the Vikings. Bode Bangerter also had two kills, one assist and three digs. Defensively, Curtis Gerber was the team’s best passer – having the highest serve-receive rating – and additionally recorded four digs on the night.
Viewmont is now 2-0 in Region play and 2-2 on the young season.
Farmington
Farmington defeated Sky View 25-16, 21-25, 25-18, 25-22 Mar. 11 behind junior Pearce Eliason’s 28 kills and 13 from senior Tucker Blackham.
Senior Tavin Fulton ran the team’s offense with 32 assists and on defense, senior Xander Crowley and junior Yuvraj Multani both recorded five blocks, Blackham added four and Fulton had three. Junior Charlie Evans got up 10 digs to lead the team on the back line.
“The team energy was palpable and cohesiveness was spot on,” said head coach Jennifer Lowe.
The Phoenix squad is now 2-0.
Davis
Davis lost to Mountain Ridge in a tight five-setter 20-25, 25-22, 15-25, 25-13, 17-15 Mar. 11.
Senior Luke McKnight had a monster night with 21 kills and 19 digs while serving up four aces. Senior Chase Valentine also had an impressive double-double with 17 kills and 17 digs with two aces as well. Together, the duo combined for 38 of the team’s 55 kills and recorded all of the aces from the serving line. Senior Siona Faeamani and senior Chase Finlinson ran the Darts’ offense with 26 and 20 assists, respectively. On the defensive side, senior Brandon Sims had 11 digs with senior Jackson Kuma recording three blocks.
Against Lone Peak Mar. 13, Davis lost 25-23, 25-21, 19-25, 25-21. McKnight and Valentine both had 11 kills with junior Jack Bennett adding 10. Bennett, Finlinson and Faeamani combined fore 39 assists in running the offense while Sims and Valentine combined for 26 digs on the back line.
The Darts fell to 1-3 early on this season.
Woods Cross
In Woods Cross’ four-set loss to Bountiful, senior RJ Violette had 10 kills while senior Lincoln Preston and senior Khang Tran had eight each. Defensively, junior Sean Vanous recorded 13 digs with Tran and junior Clayton Schmitt had nine and eight digs, respectively.
Against Clearfield Mar. 13, the Wildcats again lost in four sets 25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 30-28.
Tran led the team with a double-double of 15 kills and 11 digs while Schmitt also had double figures in two categories with 17 assists and 10 digs. Violette put away eight kills to go with eight blocks at the net. Vanous and senior David Taylor combined for 28 digs on the defensive end. Woods Cross fell to 5-5 this year and 0-2 in Region 5.
