BOUNTIFUL—Spring is here and with it brings sports and other activities. The South Davis Recreation Center has a whole program of fun events for kids and adults starting April 7.

“We had a successful winter,” said Sarah Johnson with the Recreation Center. “Our Jr. Jazz program is the largest in the state.”

Some of the popular sports are flag football and soccer, she said. “There is heavy participation in both. Soccer will be held at Centerville Community Park and flag football is at West Bountiful Elementary. We try to use different places in the community.”

They are coed, said Johnson. “We also have youth volleyball and baseball.”

The program is all volunteer based, she said. “We have 100 teams and the volunteers are from the community. Across the board we have good volunteering here. We have support from a local distributor for jerseys.”

There are scholarships available to those kids who qualify due to hardship, Johnson said. “We want to make sure all children are able to take part. We also have adaptive programming at the rec center. We’re inclusive of all abilities.”

The rec center will have a men's basketball league, Johnson said. “You have to be 21 or older. That will be held at Millcreek Jr. It’s strongly attended in the Bountiful area.”

There will be youth sports camps that run from June through August, Johnson said. “There are a variety of options, like pickleball, tennis, etc. The focus is on pre-K – 6th/7th.”

Johnson said they’re excited to expand the programs. “Our purpose is to ensure that the public’s needs are met. We enjoy the relationships created and want to form some good connections with the community by introducing introductory fundamentals around sports and encourage healthy and active lifestyles that they can use throughout their lives.”

The programs also give kids a chance to interact with other cities, she said. “They can form new friendships. We also employ teenagers and provide a safe place of employment. They’re the backbone of the program.”
