The Farmington High girls golf team placed second and third in the first two Region 1 tournaments this spring before winning the Valley View Tournament April 10 by 14 strokes. Also in the top-12 were senior Claire Norton and Tynisha Coleman, who both shot 89s and tied for 11th.
“It was so cool and I’m so proud of the girls,” said head coach Stephanie Belnap. “Valley View is a tough course to play and walk and they did so well!”
Also competing for the Phoenix squad were Dallas Newsome and Ellie Baugh (101) and Avery Rice (115).
The JV girls team were also in first place with senior Kylie McKeown taking first with a nine-hold score of 49 followed by senior Brinklee Bradshaw with a 50 and freshman Emily Dallas in third-place with a 51.
“So basically, we kicked butt!” said Belnap. “It was beautiful weather which is really something we're not used to for our season. All in all, it was just a great day and I’m so proud of the girls.”
Other JV players on the course for Farmington were Caroline Rigby (60) and Gigi Tapia and Paisley Gibb (61).
The Davis High girls golf team finished sixth at Valley View with a team score of 408.
At Glen Eagle March 18, the Phoenix squad was second behind Taylor’s 77 and Dewsnup tying for seventh place and Wilcox tenth.
“We had some youngsters that really stepped up!” Belnap said. “It was a beautiful day for golf! The sun was shining, I saw some wonderful things from the team – great attitudes and good comebacks from having a bad hole.”
Sophomore Leah Larsen, who is new this season, won the JV tournament with Dallas taking second.
“I think they are all happy to be playing and looking forward to a great season!”
At Remuda March 26, Farmington took third with a team score of 304.
Taylor shot a 71 – her first round under par in competition and shattering her personal-best score by six strokes. Dewsnup had her lowest round – by three strokes – with a round of 75, Norton bettered her score by 15, shooting a 78 and Coleman taking 20 strokes off her personal best, coming in with an 80. Dallas shot a 92 in her first varsity tournament and Bradshaw got under 100 for the first time with a score of 98.
“Overall, it was a great showing for our team,” Belnap said. “There are three teams in the region that are within five strokes of winning and placing third so it’s very competitive/ I see so many wonderful things and love the commitment and depth we have on the team. We have lots of fun and enjoy being together.”
Rice won the JV tournament with a 40 with Newsome finishing fourth with a 45.
