Davis wins Westlake boys volleyball tournament

Davis
Davis defeated Layton 25-11, 25-19, 25-12 April 15 behind 12 kills from Luke McKnight and 11 from Chase Valentine. Siona Faeamani and Jack Bennett ran the offense with a combined 23 assists. On defense, Valentine completed a double-double with 12 digs with Bennett tops at the net with five blocks.
Against Weber April 17, the Darts won 25-18, 25-20, 25-16. Valentine and McKnight both recorded 10 kills while McKnight served up three aces. Faeamani and Sims had 24 assists between them and Sims was tops defensively with eight digs.
Davis won the Westlake tournament April 19, going 3-1 on the weekend. The Darts defeated Herriman 25-13, 25-11; West Jordan 25-10, 25-14, 25-10; and Crimson Cliffs 25-22, 25-18, 16-14; while losing a five setter to Salem Hills 25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 15-25, 15-11.
“We played really well as a team and have set a new standard for ourselves,” said head coach McKay Barker. “Overall, it was a great weekend for us. We have a lot to work on to get ready for the last part of the season, but we are looking forward to all the challenges.”
Davis is now 11-15 overall and 5-1 in Region 1 play.
Farmington
Farmington beat Syracuse 28-26, 25-, 16, 26-28, 25-22 April 15.
“Our boys played terrific!” said head coach Jennifer Lowe.
Junior outside hitter Pearce Eliason put away 25 kills and had 14 digs to lead the Phoenix squad with senior middle blocker Yuvraj Multani and Preston Loucks each serving up four aces. Senior setter Tavin Fulton recorded 39 assists while also having 12 digs and seven blocks on the defensive end. Others big on the back line were junior libero Charlie Evans (19 digs), Tucker Blackham (12) and Loucks (10).
Against Bountiful April 16, Farmington won 26-24, 23-25, 22-25, 26-24, 15-10.
“We swept Bountiful on all three teams,” said Lowe.
Eliason had 28 kills while Blackham added 17 kills. They both recorded double-doubles with 10 and 11 digs, respectively with Fulton running the offense with 59 assists. Evans led on defense with 17 digs and Eliason also added six blocks at the net.
“Pearce, Tavin and Charlie continue to shine with consistency and efficiency,” Lowe said, while also noting senior middle blockers Justin Pugmire and Yuvi Multani’s domination at the net with blocks.
The Phoenix squad defeated Layton 25-16, 25-19, 25-12 April 17 behind Eliason’s 21 kills, Fulton’s 32 assists, Multani’s five blocks and Evans’ nine digs.
On April 18, Farmington pulled out a tight five set match against Pleasant Grove 25-22, 26-28, 26-28, 27-25, 15-13.
Eliason had 21 kills and 13 digs and Blackham also had a double-double with 17 kills and 10 digs. Multani had a monster match at the net with 17 blocks with Evans recording 19 digs on the back line to go with Loucks’ 10 digs.
The Phoenix improved to 5-1 in the Region 1 standings and are 12-4 on the year.
Bountiful
#2 Bountiful defeated Bonneville 25-20, 31-29, 25-15 April 15.
The Redhawks lost in a tough five-setter to Farmington April 16.
Against Roy April 17, Bountiful swept the Royals 25-20, 25-19, 25-17.
The team is now 13-4 overall and remain undefeated through 10 Region 5 matches.
Viewmont
Viewmont defeated Northridge 25-13,2 5-20, 23-25, 25-15 April 15.
Harrison Nagel put away 11 kills while also recording three digs, three aces and a block.
“Bode Bangerter led the team with excellent defense and all-around strong play,” said head coach Karl Lippa, of the senior who had nine digs, three kills, two aces and a block. “Both Harrison and Bode were effective on both sides of the court for us, which helped our victory.”
Curtis Gerber was also noted by coach Lippa for his “solid backcourt play” of five digs, multiple service runs and an ace. “Curtis did a tremendous job for the team on both defense and serve-receive.”
Against Bonneville April 17, the Vikings won 31-29, 25-11, 23-25, 25-17. Matt Welsh had 13 kills, five digs and one block while Sam Higginson added 10 kills, seven digs, two aces and one block. Jonathan Williquette ran the offense with 32 assists while serving two aces and recording four digs.
Viewmont is now 9-1 in Region 5 and 13-5 on the season.
Woods Cross
Woods Cross lost to Clearfield 25-20, 25-13, 21-25, 25-18 April 15.
Against Box Elder April 17, the Wildcats were swept 25-22, 25-19, 25-12, falling to 3-7 in Region 5 play and 8-10 on the year.
