With May now here, state tournament action is about to begin for high school spring sports. In boys soccer, a couple of teams look like viable candidates to bring home the top prize.
Bountiful
The Redhawks have put together a terrific season and currently hold the No. 3 spot in Class 5A’s RPI rankings. With two regular-season games to go, Bountiful has already clinched the Region 5 championship, thanks to its perfect 12-0 record. Overall, the Redhawks have a glossy 14-1 mark, with their only loss coming in a shootout back in the season opener on March 6 to Mountain Ridge.
In league play, the Redhawks have employed an efficient offense and a stingy defense.
Through 12 region contests, Bountiful has posted seven shutouts and had four other games in which it allowed just one goal. Only Clearfield scored more than once on Bountiful – and that came in a 3-2 Bountiful win on March 27. On April 29, the Redhawks kept Clearfield off the board in a rematch between the two teams, with Bountiful prevailing on the road 3-0. Elias Pacheco had a goal and an assist, while Trent Millard and Austin Childers scored too. Pim DeJonge and Josh Clegg assisted on goals, while goalie Carter Watson earned the shutout.
Bountiful played at Box Elder on Thursday, after our press deadline, before finishing the regular season with a game at Roy on May 6. The 5A state tournament gets underway May 9 with first-round action on the home fields of higher-seeded teams.
Davis
In Class 6A, Davis holds the No. 5 spot in the RPI rankings. The 9-5 Darts are atop Region 1 with a 6-3 mark in league play, just a game ahead of second-place Weber and Layton.
Davis plays at Layton on Friday to conclude the regular season. A victory would clinch the Darts the region title and help the team solidify its playoff seeding. Davis enters the regular-season finale with redemption on its mind. The Darts lost at Fremont 3-0 on Wednesday.
Kyle Livermore has been Davis’ most productive player. The senior midfielder has scored a team-high eight goals and leads the Darts in assists with six. Goalkeeper Nicholas Forsyth has posted six shutouts.
Viewmont
The Vikings are in second place in Region 5 behind Bountiful, sporting a 9-4 record. Viewmont has one final game before the state playoffs, a home game with Roy on Thursday, after our press deadline.
Viewmont is 10-6 overall and is eighth in the 5A RPI rankings. The team has won three of its last four games, including a 3-1 victory at Box Elder on April 29. In that contest, Viewmont got two goals from Jacob Ramos, giving him six for the season. Ashton Simkins also scored and added an assist. Drew Breese also assisted on a goal for the Vikings.
If Viewmont holds its current RPI ranking, it would secure a first-round bye and host a second-round playoff game on May 12.
Woods Cross
The Wildcats are 18th in the RPI rankings and have an overall record of 6-7. In region games, Woods Cross is 6-6, occupying fifth place in Region 5.
On April 29, Woods Cross shut out Roy 1-0 on the road. Spencer Keddington scored for the Wildcats, recording his second goal of the year.
The final regular-season game for the Wildcats will be May 6 when they play at Box Elder.
Farmington
The 5-7 Phoenix have had an up-and-down season. Farmington is tied for fourth in Region 1 with a 4-5 mark.
Most recently, Farmington lost at home to Weber by the count of 3-1. The team is 12th in the RPI rankings and finishes the regular season at Syracuse on Friday.
Farmington has been competitive in region play. The Phoenix have not lost a league game by more than two goals, with four losses coming by a single goal.
