Davis, Bountiful win Region 1 and Region 5 boys volleyball titles

Bountiful

Second-ranked Bountiful defeated Clearfield 23-25, 28-26, 25-22, 25-17 April 29.

“It was a fun match with both teams fighting to get the win the last week of region,” said head coach Sarah Chism.

Against Box Elder May 1, the Redhawks won 25-18, 25-18, 25-18.

Bountiful also recorded a sweep against Pleasant Grove 25-19, 25-19, 25-16 to finish the regular season 23-4 and wrap up the Region 5 championship with an undefeated 14-0 mark.

In the 5A state bracket, #2 Bountiful will face the winner of #15 WXHS/#18 West in the second round May 9.

Davis

Davis defeated Fremont 25-19, 25-15, 29-27 April 29.

Luke McKnight put away 14 kills with Jack Bennett recording a double-double of 13 digs and 16 assists. Siona Faeamani also helped run the offense with 20 assists. On defense, Buster Sims recorded 14 digs and Chase Valentine added 12.

Against Layton on Senior Night May 1, the Darts swept the Lancers 25-10, 25-18, 25-18 to win their first Region 1 title. 

Valentine led offensively with 14 kills and also served up three aces. Jac Bennet and Faeamani combined for 27 assists with Sims recorded 12 digs on defense and McKnight adding 11.

The seniors honored were McKnight, Faeamani, Valentine, Sims, Hayden Baughman, Jackson Kuma, Jacob McCauley, Gavin Morrell, Austin Nelson, Tyler Pulley, Liam Shiner and Jace Taula.

Davis finished its region schedule with a 9-1 mark and were 17-7 in the regular season.

After a bye in the first round of the 6A state tournament, the eighth-seeded Darts will face #9 Corner Canyon in the second round May 9.

Farmington

Farmington swept Weber 30-28, 25-16, 25-23 April 29.

Pearce Eliason had 18 kills in the win with Tucker Blackham, Tavin Fulton and Yuvraj Multani also adding four each. Fulton recorded 38 assists in running the offense. Defensively, Charlie Evans led with 17 digs and Blackham had 13. Head coach Jennifer Lowe named Preston Loucks as player of the game with the senior serving up an ace and contributing eight digs.

Against Syracuse May 1 on Senior Night, the Phoenix squad won 25-18, 22-25, 26-24, 25-20.

Eliason had a double-double of 21 kills and 13 digs while Blackham added 12 kills. Fulton’s 45 assists ran the offense and Multani and Justin Pugmire each stuffed three blocks at the net.

The seniors recognized were Blackham, Fulton, Loucks, Pugmire and Xander Crowley.

Farmington finished 8-2 in Region 1 play and 19-7 during the regular season.

Following a bye in the first round of the 6A state tourney, No. 10 Farmington takes on seventh-seeded Lone Peak May 9.

Viewmont

Viewmont swept Box Elder 25-23, 25-15, 25-23 April 29.

“Our blocking dictated set two in a match with big hitting and big blocking from both sides,” said head coach Karl Lippa.

Matt Welsh had 17 kills, eight digs, two blocks and two aces to lead the Vikings with Carson Tovey adding 13 kills, six digs, one block and an ace. Coach Lippa also noted Dallin Lether “running the offense well” with 34 assists, eight digs, four kills and four blocks.

Against Roy on Senior Night May 1, Viewmont won 25-16, 25-16, 20-25, 25-16.

Sam Higginson had four kills, 10 assists, two aces and a block with Curtis Gerber recording five digs and one assist while “passing well,” according to Lippa. Bode Bangerter’s two kills and three digs along with Britain Bredthauer’s two kills, two blocks and two digs were also key in the win.

Welsh, Higginson, Gerber, Bangerter, Bredthauer, Jackson Veigel and Dominic Dirkmaat were the seniors honored.

“All seniors impacted the win,” said Lippa. “I was pleased to have their leadership for this program and I am so pleased with all of them.”

The Vikings finished second in Region 5 with a 12-2 record and were 16-6 during the regular season.

No. 5 Viewmont plays the winner of #12 Clearfield/#21 Hunter in the second round of the 5A state tournament May 9.

Woods Cross

Woods Cross pulled out a five-setter against Roy 24-26, 25-19, 25-21, 16-25, 15-10 on Senior Night April 29.

The Wildcats honored 10 seniors – Grant Hamblin, Lincoln Hibbert, William Lane, Mosiah Matagi, Lincoln Preston, Steve Sauni, David Taylor, Kimbo Tapusoa, Khang Tran and RJ Violette – before the match.

Against Northridge May 1, Woods Cross won 16-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-15.

The Wildcats ended Region 5 matches with a 6-8 mark and were 14-13 in the regular season.

Woods Cross, seeded 15th, faces No. 18 West in the first round of the 5A state tournament.
