Bountiful volleyball fourth at state; Davis sixth; Farmington also top-10

Bountiful

In the second round of the 5A state tournament, No. 2 Bountiful defeated 15th-seeded Woods Cross 25-11, 25-17, 25-12 May 9 after earning a bye in the first round. In the quarterfinals, the Redhawks defeated Springville 25-14, 25-19, 25-16 before losing to Wasatch 25-20, 17-25, 25-21, 25-20 in the semifinal round. In the third-place match, Bountiful lost to Alta in a tight three-setter 20-25, 25-21, 26-24.

“Our team had an amazing season with hard work, dedication and teamwork,” said head coach Sarah Chism, of her squad that went undefeated in Region 5 for the second consecutive year. “While the season ended a little short of what we were hoping, we’re proud of everything we accomplished as a team. We fought hard until the end and believed in each other.”

Region 5 Player of the Year Landon Chism had 312 kills this season, hitting .300, while recording 229 digs and passing a 2.5. First Team All-Region outside hitter Connor Burleson put away 335 kills, hit .283, had 164 digs and had a 2.2 passing rating. First Team All-Region setter Kainoa Evans ran the offense with 937 assists while also serving 38 aces and recording 50 blocks and 210 digs. Middle blocker Matt Pulsipher and libero Jaren Calder were named Second Team All-Region and right side hitter Aidan Sanford was recognized as Honorable Mention.

Davis

At the 6A state tournament, No. 8 Davis lost to No. 9 Corner Canyon 26-24, 25-20, 25-23 in the second round May 9, following byes for both teams in the first round. In the consolation round, the Darts defeated Weber 25-20, 25-22 and Skyridge 25-21, 25-22. In the 6th/8th place game against Farmington May 10, Davis won 25-17, 25-21.

“We had a tough first loss to Corner Canyon, but the team rallied and finished out winning without dropping a set,” said head coach McKay Barker. “We are proud with how we finished.”

Senior outside hitter Luke McKnight put away 47 kills on the weekend while senior Chase Valentine added 30. Junior setter Jack Bennett and senior setter ran the offense with 47 assists and 38 assists, respectively. Defensively at the net, senior Jackson Kuma had 17 blocks while Bennett recorded 28 digs on the back line.

“We have a lot to be proud of this season and we are looking forward to continue to grow this new exciting sport,” said Barker.

Farmington

#10 Farmington lost a tough five-setter to No. 7 Lone Peak 20-25, 24-26, 25-14, 26-24, 25-14 in the second round of the 6A state tournament following first-round byes May 9.

In the consolation round, the Phoenix squad beat American Fork 25-9, 25-20 behind six kills and four digs from Pearce Eliason. Tavin Fulton ran the offense with 11 assists and Charlie Evans served up three aces. Defensively, Yuvraj Multani had three blocks.

In a two-set win over Syracuse 25-19, 25-15, Eliason put away 10 kills and Fulton had 29 assists. On defense, Evans had 13 digs and Xander Crowley stuffed four blocks.

In taking eighth place overall with a loss to Davis 25-17, 25-21 May 10 Eliason led with 11 kills and seven digs with Fulton recording 11 assists and Justin Pugmire six blocks.

“It was quite the ride,” said coach Jennifer Lowe. “We should have placed higher and had some heartbreaking losses. It was an amazing group of boys with incredible character who all got along really well. Shantell Fulton was an amazing head coach and really led the charge for these boys.”

Eliason finished the season at the top of the entire state with 458 kills. Fulton was third in the 6A ranks with 871 assists and was fifth overall. Multani was first in 6A with 121 blocks with Justin Pugmire in second with 90.

Viewmont

No. 5 Viewmont earned a bye in the first round of the 5A state tournament before facing #12 Clearfield May 9 in the second round and winning in three sets 25-17, 27-25, 25-19. In the quarterfinals, the Vikings lost to Alta 26-24, 25-19, 25-21 and fell to the consolation bracket. In its final match May 10, Viewmont lost to Salem Hills 25-19, 25-16.

“It was such an enjoyable season this year,” said head coach Karl Lippa. “This group of young man, along with great managers and coaching staff, made Viewmont Volleyball even more successful in the second year of boys volleyball in Utah. The team had a successful season making it to the State Quarterfinals as the #5 seed. We finished the season with an overall record of 17-8.”

“I was so impressed with the explosion of interest in boys volleyball for the entire state,” Lippa said. “With the higher level of talent throughout the region and state, I was very pleased this year’s team rising higher than last year’s initial year and a second place finish in a more competitive Region 5. I would like to recognize my Senior class for their leadership, hard work, and being genuinely wonderful young men. While they pass the torch on for next year, I am excited for the success of Viewmont volleyball to continue.”

Outside hitter Matt Welsh, opposite Carson Tovey and setter Dalin Lether were named to the All-Region First Team with middle blocker Thomas MacKay given Second Team honors and outside hitter/libero Jack Veigel being named Honorable Mention.

Woods Cross

In the 5A state tournament, No. 15 Woods Cross swept 18th-seeded West 25-23, 25-22, 25-19 May 5 in the first round. The second-round matchup against No. 2 Bountiful resulted in a 25-11, 25-17, 25-12 loss, putting them in the consolation bracket. In what ended up being the Wildcats’ final match of the season, they lost to Cedar Valley in a tight two-setter 25-21, 25-23 May 10.

Outside hitter Khang Tran was named to the All-Region First Team with middle blocker RJ Violette on the Second Team and right side/outside hitter/middle blocker Will Lane and outside hitter Lincoln Preston receiving Honorable Mention recognition.
